Student charged after sending text message

On Aug. 30, 2007, at approximately 8:30 a.m.. a parent, while at home, noticed a text message on his daughter's cell phone depicting a cartoon character holding a pipe bomb, the message inferred that the pipe bomb was for a teacher at Peakview Elementary School. The parent responded to Peakview Elementary School, 19451 E. Progress Circle in Centennial to confront his daughter about the text message. His daughter advised that she was unaware of the message.

At approximately 8:56 AM, Sheriff's Deputies responded to the school to investigate the situation. The reporting parent and his 10-year-old daughter were contacted by deputies.

The school was placed into secure perimeter status while staff, teachers and patrol deputies conducted a search for any suspicious items. Sheriff's investigators and a member of the bomb squad conducted interviews and searched the teacher's vehicle.

Information was developed which led to the identity of the subject responsible for the suspicious text message. The subject, an 11-year-old female, admitted to sending the text message after being disciplined by the teacher.

The subject was transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center and will face charges of:

18-9-109 C.R.S. Interference with staff, faculty, or students of educational institutions.The violation is punishable, upon conviction, of a consequence to be determined by the juvenile court.
