Girl struck by car while fleeing police
Contributed by: Arapahoe County Sheriff on 6/20/2008

On June 19, 2008, at approximately 11:09 PM, Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office Deputies responded to the area of 5700 East Arapahoe Road on the report of an unknown injury accident.

While en-route, dispatch advised deputies that a vehicle had gone off the road and into the field on the north side of East Arapahoe Road. It was also reported that the driver was attempting to leave the scene. Upon arrival the deputies located a blue Hyundai Accent that had struck a pole and was high centered on a dirt mound. The driver of the vehicle was identified as a juvenile female.

Initial investigation determined the subject was intoxicated and needed to be evaluated by rescue. At approximately 11:32 PM, South Metro Fire Rescue personnel decided to transport her to the hospital for further evaluation. The subject then attempted to run away from the scene on foot, fleeing onto Arapahoe Road. Deputy Reed grabbed the subject by the right arm as she attempted to run past the patrol cars, which were parked in the right lane of traffic for westbound Arapahoe Road with their emergency lights activated. Deputy Reed realized that both he and the subject were going to be struck by an oncoming vehicle traveling westbound in the left lane of traffic. The vehicle, a 2004 Ford Minivan, swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting them; however, the juvenile subject was struck by the car. The juvenile was immediately transported to an area hospital for treatment.

At this time the cause of the initial accident is still under investigation. For further information please contact Sheriff J. Grayson Robinson at 720-874-4165.
