The quiet community of Antelope nestled in eastern rural Centennial, is so tired of cut-through traffic disobeying their speed limit and stop signs, they've begun an aggressive campaign to alert all traffic that this community is not the community to break the law in.
With the support of The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office and help from caring neighbors, Antelope has placed several signs throughout their community urging and reminding drivers to obey the 25 mph speed limit and stop signs throughout the neighborhood.
Antelope is a small, close-in country community of 118 properties with no sidewalks, where driveways egress directly onto the thoroughfare. The community is flanked by Grandview High School on the southeast and Creekside Elementary School on the northwest and used by surrounding neighborhoods as a cut-through street to and from these two schools.
Children cross streets and walk along the shoulder to their bus stops as well as to school and you frequently see people walking dogs or families pushing strollers. "People speed by with no regard for children, pets or the safety of those walking along the road," said
Karen Reddick
, property owner who orchestrated the movement. "You put your life in danger every time you go near the street."
With the support of several neighbors who post reminder signs in their yards during the week, and with the help of The Arapahoe County Sheriff's regular traffic patrols in the neighborhood, Antelope has seen a noticeable difference with the traffic slowing down and stopping at stop signs. What's the cost of a speeding or traffic ticket in Centennial? $100.00.
Antelope plans to continue the traffic calming campaign through the end of the school year and hopes to see more improvement as the year progresses and drivers realize the importance of obeying the traffic laws, especially when traveling through Antelope.
