Have you ever passed someone on the street and wished you could have that person's life? Every day we look at people with envy, people we don't even know. What if you could tap that stranger on the shoulder, that person you think you want to be and ask them for their help - turn me into you in just 48 hours? This is the pilot for a new show on MTV titled
Why Can't I Be You?
Why Can't I Be You? shows somebody who thinks of themselves as a loser. The loser desperately follows around somebody they think they want to be like that they have previously seen from a distance. The loser tries to absorb as much as they can about their cooler counterpart's life in order to better their own and in return the cool "teacher" is rewarded 1,000 dollars.
Why Can't I Be You? marks the death of individuality. It marks the end of the freedom in society for people to be themselves. No longer can we be happy with who we are, we have to constantly strive to be just like somebody else.
Why Can't I Be You? teaches those who consider themselves 'too fat' or 'too skinny', those who think they are ugly, un-cool and unpopular that in order to be successful, find love, be happy and be worth anything you have to wear designer clothes, gel your hair, be athletic and get drunk. It leaves no room for the unique. You better be uniform with what the world says is cool or you'll be left behind.
A great public speaker named
Bob Lenz gives three reasons for fighting society's system of determining self-worth: 1.) It's not working - Society is telling us that only the popular, the prestigious, the powerful and those with the most possessions are the only ones with value (the "P's" of society.) 2.) Its not fair - We don't give those who we view as a "P" of society the chance to succeed. We judge others before we get to know them based on what society tells us a successful person appears to be. 3.) It controls us - We allow society's system of telling us who is valuable to dictate how we act, what we wear, who we befriend and what we think. We have allowed society's system to tell us how much we are worth.
It is estimated that 8 million Americans have an eating disorder. South Carolina Department of Mental Health has determined that eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. We see headlines in tabloids of the rich and famous getting dangerously skinny and it's not hard to see that our obsession with self image is everywhere. It's an atrocity to everyone the pressure we have put on each other to be perfect because nobody is perfect! It's not humanly possible to be the coolest or the best looking. And even if you were able to have everything society says you need you still wouldn't be happy.
We need to stop judging others and actually take the time to get to know them. No longer should any of us continue to wish we could be somebody else. Why can't we just be happy in our own skin? We are all worthwhile. We all have a purpose. When
Hitler was in power, the society he controlled terminated life he deemed not worth of life. Everybody - no matter what your race, religion, appearance, athletic ability, intelligence, age or handicaps - has worth. Be unique! Be who you were made to be. Hitler was wrong. Every life is worthy of life. You are worthy of life, no matter what.
