Surfing the Wave in Utah
Contributed by: Tish Jeffers on 5/17/2007

Hovering over our computers on the first day of the month, precisely at noon, we were trying to score tickets. You would think this much effort would be for the Rolling Stones or something comparable, but we were on a quest for Bureau of Land Management passes to a place called the Wave at Paria Canyon in Utah.

Month after month, we tried. No use! They would all be sold out within seconds!
What is this place? Why is it so hard to get these pesky $5 passes? So we finally drove all the way to Paria Ranger station in Utah to get in on the lottery they have every morning at 9. They only issue 20 passes per day. 10 on-line on that 1st day of the month (for 4 months advance) , and 10 in person. There were people from all over the U.S. there, and some from overseas. Our hearts dropped as we surveyed the odds. Luckily, they called our number, and our dream was finalized!.

The Wave at Paria Canyon has suddenly burst onto the world's radar, as a must-see place in the U.S. People from all over the world are trying to get those coveted passes to see a remarkable combination of wind, water and petrified sand better known as vermillion cliffs. These gorgeous cliffs are only accessible by a 7 mile hike in and out. There is no trail. The rangers give you a series of photographs for you to make your way.

Was it worth it? When we approached the Wave, we were overwhelmed at it's beauty. Even National Geographic couldn't capture the feeling of actually seeing it.It's beauty and fragileness surpasses many of the places we have traveled to see. Utah is an amazing state. This is truly a must see of a life-time.

Trish - WOW. Utah IS amazing. I thought we had it all right here at home, but with Moab, Bryce - and this hidden gem, I bow to their geographical blessings. Imagine running cattle through that state! I am sure the lottery is to keep traffic - and therefore abuse - to a minimum. Worth every second of panic! Congrats!
