"Kendall, what are you most afraid of when you think about going for your bone marrow transplant?" She replied, "Losing my hair."
Kendall Atkinson
was born and reared in Centennial, Colorado. At an early age, she was diagnosed with Fanconi Anemia, a blood disease generally necessitating a bone marrow transplant. After years of living with this reality, Kendall required the bone marrow transplant. Kendall knew the loss of her hair was inevitable, and so she learned to knit to make hats for herself before the battle of her young life. After months of fighting, she died in March of 2004 at the age of 20.
In Kendall's memory, her two older sisters,
Allison
and
Whitney
, founded the "Kaps For Kendall" non-profit organization. It's goal is to provide fun, creative and soft hats for kids and adults who have lost their hair from chemotherapy and radiation and to raise money to fight Fanconi Anemia, the disease that took the life of their sister. Volunteers in the community make caps and hats which are purchased by sponsors, and are then donated to children and adult cancer and hematology treatment centers throughout Colorado.
In 2006, over 400 hats were sponsored and were donated to treatment centers ,and over $10,000 was donated to the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund. The goal for 2007 is to meet or exceed what was accomplished in 2006.
On behalf of the
Atkinson
family, the neighborhood and the local community, we would sincerely appreciate your consideration of the $1,000 grant in order that this well-deserving and needy organization can continue its amazing and rewarding project.

This is a great cause, and we are crocheting like crazy around here, just imagining a special head and heart that will wear our caps! Kendall would love this.

Awesome cause! Our 13-y-o son also has FA. We love the Atkinsons and we're awed by their diligence in fund-raising for a cure for this wretched disorder despite their own very tragic, overwhelming losses. I can't think of a better cause for this grant money to go towards.

Awesome story! But in my preview of it, there were no spacing issues and there are some in this version. Can you go in and correct them?
