I grew up in Denver and lived 7 miles from Mile High Stadium. Ever since I can remember the Broncos were on our television.
Once VCR's were invented and came to our house, the Broncos were on 7 days a week! I had never seen a baseball game in person or even on t.v.! My family were Bronco fanatics. Ultimately, I learned to hate football and eventually all sports were taboo with me.
Then in February 1993, my dad passed away unexpectedly, I had trouble eating, sleeping and everyday just seemed like a fog. In April of 1993, a good friend of mine invited me and 2 other friends to Rockies Inaugural Opening Day.
That was the best day I'd had since my dad had died, as it turned out it was the best day I would have for quite a few more months. I was just so amazed at how complete strangers could become friends so quickly and how a stadium full of 70,000+ people could bond and become comrades for one cause.
That beautiful spring day in April of 1993,came to make me a fan of baseball and of The Colorado Rockies because I feel like I am with friends, even if I don't know all of their names. Every game I attend in pre-season, regular season and post-season has given me the opportunity to learn my newfound friends names, where they live, and who their favorite players are. Since 1993, I have only missed one Opening Day because of Finals Testing that couldn't be avoided.
Over the past 15 years, the people that attend Opening Day with us has fluctuated, however there are10 of us die-hard Rockies fans that remains consistant. We call each other to make our Opening Day plans every year and this year, as with every other year, we will meet each other on the corner of 20th & Blake Street 4 hours before game time. These are the 10 people that I would like to share a suite with at Coors Field.
