After the tremendous run the Rockies made last season, I did something I never thought I would ever do. As a 49 year old man, I bought a team jersey! Sure, I was caught up in the moment, who wasn't. I boldly walked into the store, picked out the jersey I wanted (it had the World Series patch on it), plunked down my money and left a happy man.
A few days later, I wanted to show off my purchase to my baseball-crazed son. He would be so proud of his dad! I put on the jersey, ran downstairs with Christmas morning excitement and displayed my authentic Kaz Matsui jersey. "He got traded" , my son deadpanned as he continued to do his homework. My jaw dropped. I had been duped! The Rockies organization had mocked a 49 year-old man in his finest hour!
Clint Hurdle
was scheduled to speak at my church, Cherry Hills Community, and I would go and give him a piece of my mind. He could have called, emailed, something to let me know that MAYBE the
Tulowitzki
jersey was the better choice!
Sunday came, Mr. Hurdle spoke, and I was taken by his candor, humble tone and enthusiasm about the team. Nothing had changed from the bad times and the good; they always believed they were a good team and they always thought that they had the chemistry to do well. Proving that to the public had always been the toughest part of his job. I found myself respecting his love of God, family and what he was doing. I left with a great feeling not only about what the Rockies had accomplished but also about what they were about to embark on; a new season with new confidence being led by a man who has found a great balance and happiness in his life.
I recently took my son to Arizona for Spring Training to see the Rockies play the Diamondbacks (
Christian'
s favorite team) and the Dodgers. At the Dodger game, wearing my authentic Matsui jersey, I caught Mr. Hurdle's attention, waving at him from our seats behind home plate. I turned around, pointing to the name on my jersey, turned back and shrugged my shoulders. He laughed, shrugged his shoulders and gave me a thumbs up. I felt good about the Rockies, about being from Colorado and about the manager. I even thought the jersey I was wearing looked pretty cool!
