The Denver Broncos WILL win the AFC Championship on Sunday.
The Steelers and Broncos appear to be evenly matched in almost every statistical category, and many will say we should throw-out all the statistics at this time of year anyway. They both have solid defenses, ground games and passing offenses. The Broncos have Shannahan and the Steelers have Cowher. Both teams have winning traditions and players with playoff experience.
So where do we find a discriminator that will determine the winner?
It all comes down to one important, but often overlooked, factor: field position. In last Saturday's win over the Patriots, Denver's average starting point for each drive was the 44 yard line. Contrast that with the Patriots average of starting their drives on their own 17 yard line. That's
was
the game. Turnovers, special teams hustle, and Todd Sauerbrun's ability to drop his punts deep inside the 20, without a touchback, all contributed to a huge advantage in field position.
The teams that go deep into the playoffs tend to be fairly balanced and evenly matched making field position more important - making it the key. Even a great team, like the Patriots, can't overcome a 39 yard disadvantage in starting every drive.
The Broncos will win the battle for field postion and end up on top of the scoreboard, too.
