"I really liked the effort, the speed of our defense, some of our young receivers and our punter," Glenn said following the 62-play scrum in War Memorial Stadium. "You have to have good plays on both sides of the ball in a scrimmage. If one side dominates the other, then there is something to worry about. Do we need work, you bet we do, but we still have 16 days to work on those things."

There was no mystery as to who will be the Cowboys' starting quarterback when they open their season Sept. 2, against Utah State. It is Jacob Doss (6-2, 210, Jr., Lexington, Ky.), Glenn said. The race is now for who will be Doss' backup.

"We decided to give the keys to the car to Jake before this scrimmage," Glenn said. "His maturity, his knowledge, his throws, and the way he has practiced during camp all contributed to that decision. We'll take a look at the tape to help us with number two.

"It's close between Karsten (Sween, 6-2, 204, RFr., Inyhokern, Calif.) and Stinson (Dean, 6-2, 215, So., Blue Springs, Mo.). Dean has really helped himself because he has improved his consistency since the spring."

Dean produced the best statistics of the evening, hitting on 5 of 7 passes for 91 yards and 54-yard touchdown to freshman Greg Bolling (6-2, 190, Aurora, Colo.). Doss, who saw action on just four series, was 3 of 8 for 16 yards. Freshman Steven Headley (6-0, 210, Grapevine, Texas) was 2 of 6 for 22 yards, and Ian Hetrick (6-2, 190, Jr., Napa, Calif.) was 2 for 2 for 12 yards. He threw for one touchdown and ran for another. Sween was 0 for 3. The quarterbacks did not throw an interception.

Bolling was the top receiver with 60 yards on two catches including the 54 yard TD.

"I was pleased with a couple of those young receivers," Glenn said, especially Bolling and Levy (6-0, 178, Fr., Denver)." Levy caught three passes for 16 yards and a touchdown.

Glenn also was very happy with some things he saw on the defense. "I was really pleased with our defensive pressure. It's apparent that there is more speed there. We just have faster guys coming at the quarterback."

A pair of Wyoming natives led the defense in tackles. Linebacker Jake Edmunds (6-2, 227, So., Yoder, Wyo.) was the leading tackler on the evening with four stops, including one for a loss of one yard. Redshirt freshman Zeb Whipp (6-1, 228, Lander) had four tackles and quarterback sack for a loss of six. Senior defensive end Aaron Robbins (6-4, 256, RSr.) produced three tackles, including a sack for minus seven and one-and-a-half tackles for losses. Safety John Wendling (Sr., Rock Springs) had three tackles including two for loss. The defense's two fumble recoveries were by a pair of redshirt freshman Matt Barella (6-2, 233, RFr., Centennial, Colo.) and Danny Dutmer (6-4, 237, So., York, Neb.). The Pokes' fourth sack of the night went to senior veteran Jake Mays (6-3, 292, Aurora, Colo.) at nose tackle. For the evening the defense posted 15 tackles for losses for a minus 55 yards.

On the ground, freshman Darius Terry (5-11, 180, Colorado Springs, Colo.) had a nice evening with 68 yards on 15 carries. His long carry was 17 yards. Wynel Seldon (6-0, 205, So., San Diego, Calif.) broke his first carry of the day for a 60-yard touchdown, and saw little action after that. In fact he carried just once after that big play. Veteran Ivan Harrison (5-7, 190, Sr., Kansas City, Kan.), carried four times for 9 yards.

Glenn could hardly control his enthusiasm for the punting game following the scrimmage. "Vinnedge (Billy, 6-1, 188, Jr., Arroyo Grande, Calif.) is going to be a weapon. Punting is such a factor, and he was outstanding." Vinnedge averaged 44 yards on 7 punts, including a 56 yarder.

The Cowboys attempted a total of four field goals between their two place-kicking candidates. Jake Scott (5-8, 157, RFr., Rocklin, Calif.) was two for two, from 36 and 35 yards, and newcomer Aric Goodman (5-11, 170, Fr., Englewood, Colo.) missed on his two attempts from the same distances.

"I was pleased that we did not throw an interception, but disappointed we had the two fumbles (one on a center-quarterback exchange, and the other on a bad pitchout)," Glenn said. "We're all very aware of the emphasis there. But really two miscues in the first scrimmage is not that bad."

Maybe the best news of all came in the area of injuries. Safety John Wendling suffered a cut under his chin that required stitches, but he will be fine. There were a couple of other bumps and bruises but nothing serious or that will limit practice time.

The Cowboys ran five series that began from the offense's 35 yard line; seven from the 50-yard-line, and two from the defense's 25.

Wyoming will resume practice on Thursday with a single afternoon practice. The Pokes' second and final scrimmage of fall camp is scheduled for next Wednesday (Aug. 23) at 5:15 in the stadium.
