Carlson Named Patriot League Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year
HAMILTON, N.Y. (7/9/07) -
Kinsey Carlson of Colgate University has been named the Patriot League Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced on Monday, July 9.
This is the 41st time Colgate has had a Patriot League Scholar-Athlete, although she is the first Raider to earn the prestigious honor since 2003 and is the first women's rower to be presented with the honor.
The Patriot League began giving the award out to women rowers in 2005, with Navy earning back-to-back accolades.
"Kinsey is a great choice for this honor," head women's rowing coach
Greg Kruczynski said. "A relative newcomer to rowing, she has risen to a very competitive level very quickly. She has been able to do this while maintaining her stellar academic record. Her graduation will be a big loss to the program. She has left some big shoes to fill."
A native of Littleton, Colo. and a 2003 graduate of Littleton High School, Carlson received a dual degree in sociology/anthropology and women's studies during Colgate's spring graduation ceremony. She was named to the Dean's List each semester and graduated Magna Cum Laude with Distinction in Liberal Arts Core Curriculum. She was the 2007 recipient of the Women's Studies Department Award for Academic Excellence.
Carlson was a member of Colgate's varsity 8 boat, rowing in the 7-seat. The Raiders' varsity 8 boat finished sixth at the ECAC Metro Championship, third at the Patriot League Championship, fifth in the petite final of the Knecht Cup, third at the Head of the Fish, 20th at the Head of the Charles and seventh at the Head of the Genesee. They also finished first in duals with the University of Connecticut, University of Buffalo and took second in a race with both the University of Massachusetts and Iona.
The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) named Carlson a national scholar-athlete in 2007 as she made her second appearance on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
A member of Alpa Kappa Delta International Honor Society and Gamma Sigma Alpha National Honor Society, Carlson was selected as one of 18 women's collegiate rowers to compete at the US Women's Sculling Development Camp in July 2006. Her individual achievements also include an eighth-place finish in the open 1x at the Head of the Fish.
Outside of the classroom and the water, Carlson has been an active member of the community. She volunteered at Head Start every Friday during the spring 2007 semester and was an intern at 9to5 National Association of Working Women from 2004-05. Carlson spent the fall 2005 semester in Sweden and was a member of the Colgate swimming & diving team from 2003-04.
