ALAMOSA, Colo.- After a solid 4-year playing career capped by a 2007 Honorable Mention All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference West Division honor, Brittany Muchmore will now serve as a student assistant coach for the Grizzlies while completing her bachelor's degree in human performance and physical education.

"I'm glad that Brittany will be our student assistant. As a player, she was a hard worker and a positive leader for us. Those same good qualities will be an asset as a coach on our staff," Head Grizzly coach Lindy Mortensen said while making the announcement.

A native of Peoria, Ariz., and a 2004 graduate of Centennial High School, Muchmore finished her senior season with 270 kills as she helped lead the Grizzlies to the RMAC Tournament and a post-season win for the first time since 2003. Primarily a right side hitter that saw some time at the outside hitter position, Muchmore put down 766 career kills, good for fifth place on ASC's NCAA Division II era (1992-Present) charts, an impressive feat considering all four women above her were outside or middle hitters, who traditionally get more opportunities than players on the right side. She played in 93 total matches, tied for eighth most in ASC's Division II history, and made 49 starts. She also had 177 digs and 149 blocks in her career.

Muchmore, who will turn 23 on Aug. 4, also shined academically and was a 3-time Academic All-RMAC pick who was on the A.D.'s Honor Roll after each of her first seven semesters at ASC. She currently holds a 3.66 GPA.

She also has three years of coaching experience after working with the Dunes Volleyball Club, since its' founding in 2005.

"Brittany has gained valuable coaching experience with our local volleyball club and has worked our volleyball camps the last three years. She has a good understanding of the game. We're glad she will be joining our team in another capacity," Mortensen said.

While in high school, Muchmore garnered first team all-state and region player of the year honors as a senior for the Centennial Coyotes. She was also a first team all-region and honorable mention all-state selection as a junior in 2002 and helped lead the team to the state tournament's final four in both 2001 and 2003.

Muchmore, who played club volleyball for the Arizona Grand Canyon Juniors, is the daughter of Mary Muchmore-Hague and Merwin Grant. She has six siblings.

San Luis Valley fans can see the Grizzlies in action this Saturday as they host a spring tournament beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Grizzlies will play Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivals Fort Lewis, UC-Colorado Springs and Western State on a rolling schedule.
