HubCap: Gorilla needs Halloween help
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 10/6/2006

On Oct. 28, I'll be participating in the Denver Gorilla Run for my first time. Basically, I raised $150 to give the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund to let me run 3.5 miles around downtown Denver while wearing a gorilla suit. They provide the gorilla suit and use the money to help protect the 723 mountain gorillas remaining in the world.

Raising the money was pretty easy -- you meet a lot of people who would never dream of giving their hard-earned dollars to the Republican Party or the Democratic Party or the Sierra Club or the NRA, but nobody really has a qualm with gorillas.

Now comes the hard part: I need a costume. Yes, I'll be wearing a gorilla costume, but it's the weekend before Halloween, so I need to dress my gorilla self up as something else. I don't really have any ideas so far, so I'd appreciate some help. It needs to be relatively inexpensive, $50 or so, and feasible to run in. I've given thought to putting on full snowboard gear and carrying a snowboard for the entire run, but that's about the upper limit of weight and bulk I think I can handle. Please put your suggestions in the comments box below.

In the spirit of the gorilla's costume search, here's a few YourHub.com stories on the Halloween theme:

Lynda Pichulo, of Highlands Ranch, loves Halloween candy, but hates what it does to her hips and her conscience as a personal trainer.

Ann Himel, of Littleton, also loves Halloween candy, and how it signals the beginning of a season of the " sugar parade" that is October through January. Quote: " Every year I make an extra pie, and I spend Thanksgiving Day through mid-December eating the entire thing -- yes, all by myself. I never share when it comes to pumpkin pie."

Haunted house employee KathE Walker, of Denver, has a suggestion on which haunted house to check out this year: the one where she works.

And Barbara Neff, of Castle Rock, has been charting the progress of a pumpkin plant that may have sprouted in her front yard from a seed left over from last Halloween's pumpkin carving. Trust me, it's more entertaining than it sounds.

How about a banana skirt like the one that Josephine Baker wore in the 1920's? Sorry I can't give you more details but I wasn't in Paris in the 1920's. However, if you get hungry during the run, you can always eat a banana or two.

Depends how much you want to run in, I guess, but a trip to the army surplus store = instant costume. Last time I was there I picked up black cargo pants and a red scarf. Add to my leather jacket, big ol' boots and a $5 costume set of flight goggles and it was Instant Red Baron.
