See for Yourself Whether Episcopalians Have the Best Garage Sales
Saturday, 8-5, at Christ's Church, 615 4th Street, in Castle Rock
When I was growing up in Alabama, it was understood that an Episcopal church garage sale was a 'can't miss' event. Young families on strict budgets in need of clothes, books and toys could find topnotch stuff. College freshmen heading off to school and young adults embarking on their careers could furnish their dorm rooms and apartments with classic furniture, much higher quality than they'd find at the furniture mart, and for less at that. And there were always items -- whimsical, unexpected, and irresistible -- whose history was lost but whose allure still resonated.
My local church, Christ's Episcopal Church in Castle Rock, is carrying on the tradition of offering an eclectic and outstanding array of goods tomorrow, September 8, from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at our first annual Arts, Tarts and Treasures sale of artwork, edibles, and lightly used items. The church parking lot will be filled with items of all kinds, including
* Golf clubs and accessories
* Furniture - chairs, tables, bureaus, mirrors, sofas
* Exercise equipment - ski machine, abdominal machines, treadmills and stationery bikes
* Yard equipment - sprinkler heads, plant holders, and other gardening equipment
* All sorts of lighting - chandeliers, track lighting, and lamps of all sizes
* Household electronics - a trash compactor, televisions, vacuum cleaners
* Whimsical items -, statues, two mantle clocks
* Children's toys - push cars, outdoor equipment, books, games, action figures
* Household linens, bedding and towels
* Glass, silver and pewter items, along with a box of doorknobs
* Handyman items - saws, tools, and more
* Pet stuff - dog crates, cages for guinea pigs and other small pets, and accessories
* Books, DVDs, videos and LPs (a set of speakers, too!)
* Artwork by our artisans in our congregation, including paintings (with mats) and 'art rocks'
* Tasty treats from our bakers
As for the whimsical? Well, among other items, there is a wooden, intricately carved, waist-high Samurai statue who has endeared himself to all who've seen him. He and a few other unique and/or valuable items will be sold via silent auction. We will take bids (for those select items only) throughout the day, so don't despair if you cannot get there right at 8:00.
So come visit before, during or after your Artfest outing. I will be astounded if you cannot find something useful, beautiful or simply memorable to take home and make your own. Please call the church office at 303.688.5185 with any questions. Since the office will be closed tomorrow, you might also want to visit our website at
http://www.christsepiscopalchurch.org.
If you can't make the benefit, come on Sunday! We are kicking off our CECE education program at 9:15 a.m., between our 8:00 and 10:30 worship services. So come sign up for children's Sunday School, teen youth group, and our autumn Adult Journey discussion groups.
