Local students in global competition
Contributed by: St. Mary's Academy on 5/6/2008

Two teams of St. Mary's Academy Lower School students will advance to the Destination ImaginNation Global Finals, May 19-25, in Knoxville, Tennessee.

In all, five teams of Lower School students represented the South Metro Region at the state Destination ImaginNation tournament on April 26 at Dakota Ridge High School and Summit Ridge Middle School. This is the eighth time in 15 years that St. Mary's Academy teams have advanced to the Global Finals to represent Colorado.

In the state tournament, two teams of St. Mary's Academy Lower School students finished second. These teams will advance to the Destination ImaginNation Global Finals. The first team, called "Just Thinking...Again!," placed second in the "DI've Got A Secret" category. This team of fourth grade students created an optical illusion and set pieces that transformed into a big surprise for the audience.

"The High Flyers," whose challenge in the state competition was called "Obstacles, Of Course!," is the second team from St. Mary's Academy that will compete in the Destination ImaginNation Global Finals. This team of third and fourth grade students created an elaborate obstacle course for a remote-controlled vehicle.

More than 900 teams will compete in the Global Finals, demonstrating their solutions to the Destination ImaginNation "Team Challenges" that range from technical or mechanical to historical and theatrical. Teams from almost every state and many countries will spend four days in tournaments, where they will demonstrate their solutions to Challenges and participate in improvisational Challenges, which hone critical thinking skills.

The Destination ImaginNation Team Challenge program runs annually, and presents students working in teams of up to seven students with the opportunity to choose from five mind-bending Team Challenges that are academically-based and involve research as well as creative thinking. Each Team Challenge integrates a variety of chances to learn by doing, and features one prominent task, such as building a load-bearing structure, creating a machine, writing a performance piece, engaging in scientific exploration and improvisation.

St. Mary's Academy, located in Englewood, Colorado, is the state's oldest private k-12 school. A premier Catholic, independent school serving students throughout the Denver metro area, St. Mary's Academy offers boy and girls, grades K-8, an academically challenging environment that celebrates diversity, embraces a broad spiritual perspective, and prepares them for the highest academic endeavors. That philosophy is continued in an all-girls environment for grades 9-12. This year St. Mary's' Academy celebrates 144 years of continuous education.
