Wanted - A New Manhattan Project
Contributed by: Steve Johnson on 8/6/2008

During World War II, our leaders approved of the Manhattan Project which ultimately produced the first Atomic Bomb. It was known at the time, that the Germans were also trying to develop a Nuclear Bomb. If they had succeeded, our world would be much different today.

The threats today are just as great to our way of life as was the Axis Powers in World War II. We cannot continue to depend on foreign oil from hostile nations. Spending $700 billion a year to keep America running on foreign oil is a disaster. We as a nation must have the resolve to stop this madness.

I get mad everytime I hear another hair brained idea from people who do lead and may lead our country.

Obama wants to inflate tires to lower fuel consumption.

He wants to tap the National Oil Reserve to lower prices. This one realy gets me mad. He wants to tap 70 million barrels of oil. At todays close, oil was at $120 per barrel. Does he also want to replenish this reserve by giving the Middle East Countries another $8.4 Billion dollars to pay for oil to replenish this reserve?

He wants a Windfall Profits tax so he can ease the pain by giving each American Household $1,000 back.

Nancy Pelosi won't even allow a vote on drilling for more oil on our own soil.

Now tell me, how do any of these proposals produce one more barrel of oil or one more cubic foot of natural gas or get us any closer to reducing our dependence on foreign oil?

We do need to produce more oil and natural gas on our own soil. We do not need to keep sending our money to hostile foreign countries. It is time to come up with a national energy policy that allows us to extract our own known reserves. We need a huge push on alternative energy sources, including nuclear, wind power and solar, and we need to find new ways to use our vast reserves of natural gas and coal to offset foreign oil.

Since it is impossible to reduce our dependence on foreign oil any time soon with alternatives, we must drill now.

Look what happened the day President Bush announced he was lifting the ban on off shore drilling. The price of oil dropped the very next day and it has been dropping steadily since that time. Now if congress would also act, the drop would be even greater. We need time and breathing room to make the switch away from fossil fuels.

The time is now to demand that our leadership recognize that actions must follow, not the hair brained ideas that were outlined at the beginning of this article.

Many people are speaking up. Join them and force our ELECTED officials to vote for the future of our country and the will of the people.

We need a new Manhattan Project to insure energy independence through a multi-pronged attack.
