Gladys Mercier, Arvada.
I like living in Arvada.I am a member of Trinity Baptist Church and have many good friends there.I lived in the same house in Denver until I married, so as you can see, I am a native.My husband and I adopted 2 Korean sons who are now adults, 1 is a State Patrol Sgt., the other is an upholsterer. My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

I am glad that Commerce City did not change its name to someting different but I really had hoped that they would change it back to Derby, as it was when I and my friends were growing up.
We spent many evenings at the Derby Roller Rink. My brother Harold met his wife, Virginia Read there. They were very good at dancing on skates. The rink would announce different things, such as " couples only" or one of the dances. Harold and Virginia could really waltz on skates! Most people would stop and watch them as they waltzed around.
There was also a dance called the "Collegiate" which was fun and of course, the conga line which everyone took part in.
When I was younger, my mother would go with us to sit and watch the skaters,
( probably to keep an eye on me). My best friend, Alyce and I always went together and had a good time. We are still close friends after all this time.
Mom would not let me date until I was 15 so I had my first date on my 15th birthday.
One fellow I went with from Commerce City, Leroy, liked Joes Hamburger Shack as much as I did and we would head for there after the rink closed. Joe was a character but he made the BEST hamburgers.
I have such fun memories of " Derby" and all of the friends I had there.

I used to go to the roller rink (in Minneapolis, though)frequently in junior high. Oddly, I had to hug the wall my first few circles every time I went.

Another Gladys history lesson! I did not know Commerce City was ever "Derby". Too bad they ditched the name. I like it a lot.
