Blog Entry 66 of 130 Gladys Mercier, Arvada.
I like living in Arvada.I am a member of Trinity Baptist Church and have many good friends there.I lived in the same house in Denver until I married, so as you can see, I am a native. My husband and I adopted 2 Korean sons who are now adults, 1 is a State Patrol Sgt., the other is an upholsterer. My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

They do Walk Among us.

When I read about all of the awful things happening around me, I started thinking about the good things that are happening too, things we never hear about. To me, there are people who are the real heroes, those who go out of their way to help other people, even when no one knows what they are doing.

One of these " heroes" is my sister-in-law Norma. Her neighbor has MS and is confined to bed. Once or twice a week, Norma goes to her neighbor's house and excersizes her legs so they will not get stiff. Norma has done this for several years and I have never heard her complain about the time it takes from her busy life. She is glad to do it.

Sammy was a very cranky older lady who attended our church. She eventually had to go to a nursing home. She had no relatives here and no friends apart from church. My friend Iva Mae went to the nursing home at least once a week to get things that Sammy needed or help her repair her clothing and anything else that she needed. All the while Iva Mae was there helping her, Sammy was complaining about the way she did things or maybe she was not doing enough.
Nothing was ever enough for her. Iva Mae still went faithfully, even though she was crabbed at the whole time. I admire her for doing this when no one else would, including me.I think God will see Iva Mae as a " hero".
Sammy has passed away.

My friend Joy and I had such a good time in the 80's, shopping, visiting and drinking coffee. She had put up with so much from an unfaithful husband but was still trying to keep her home together. In about 1987, she was struck with an anuerism on her brain. She was in a coma for more than a month but finally recovered enough to go home. Her right side was paralized. No more shopping without great effort, no more of the beautiful crocheting that she did. Still, she was always in a cheerful mood, never complaining. Her husband was not there for her again so she divorced him and went on with her life as best she could.
Joy is now in a wheelchair full time and needs caretakers to help her. She is still always happy and cheerful, she laughs a lot and I never feel down after visiting her. She is a "hero " to me for overcoming all that she has and not feeling sorry for herself. She certainly has reason to.
We still drink coffee!
