HubCap: Give Meagan some college advice
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 9/1/2006

One of our favorite YourHub.com bloggers, Meagan Savage, of Parker, recently started college at the hallowed Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. I'm kind of familiar with Drake -- I ran in the Drake Relays when I was in high school, saw both Michael Johnson and Carl Lewis run there, and once got semi-politely asked to stop singing "No Woman, No Cry" and get off the stage by a reggae band that was performing at a party there.

Since this is Meagan's first year at school, and she's probably still getting adjusted to life at Drake and class, I think we should give her a little advice on how to survive her first year -- the best flavor of ramen noodles, what to do if she has an extremely boring professor, when to schedule classes (not Thursday nights or Friday mornings), and, if you did that sort of thing in college, the best way to procure a fake ID. Heaven knows I was too busy studying to worry about things like that.

Rob Guthrie, another one of our superstar bloggers, has already gotten the ball rolling on this one with two blogs containing his advice for college. One is about spring break, and the other is about the Iowa Relays at Grinnell College, and alludes to his unceremonious departure from the revered institute of higher learning that is Grinnell. I have encouraged Rob to elaborate on that story.

My advice? Red shirts, when washed with white shirts, will make the white shirts pink.

Also, Tombstone makes many, many different varieties of frozen pizza. Ignore the cafeteria food and enjoy them all.

And, anyone who tells you, "You can always retake a class. You can never relive a party," is probably going to be retaking a lot of classes.

Please enter your tidbits of advice for Meagan in the comments box below, or post a story, if you have that much wisdom to share.

Get as much experience doing things you enjoy as possible. Take advantage of opportunities that will give you an edge on all the other people who have your degree when you are finished. If I had not worked at my college newspaper, I would quite possibly still work in retail. Use internships. Make connections and get good references. Surround yourself with people who are doing what you would like to do.

Don't bring a television. There's too much stuff going on to be watching TV. If there's something you absolutely have to watch, I'm sure you'll put in the effort to find a tv to watch it.

1) If you ever have a professor you cannot understand, particularly in anything mathematic, drop the class immediately. 2) Never skip class, no matter how late you stayed out the night before. 3) Top Ramen is a staple, and still one of the least expensive food products known to man. 4) Do as I say, not as I did.

Don't wait until the last minute to do anything. Try to study as you go so you don't spend the last day freaking out trying to learn everything.
