HubCap: Mmmm ... Spudnuts
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 6/29/2006

Man, of all my favorite round foods with a hole in the middle, I'll tell you what: Doughnuts are No. 1.

Doughnuts haven't really been in vogue for quite a few years now, I guess. They kind of became seen as the policeman's food, and everybody switched over to more healthy, but still round with a hole in the middle, breakfast items, like bagels. Damn whatever breakthrough in medical science revealed that fried dough with chocolate frosting wasn't good for us.

I used to knock out doughnuts six at a time, but now that I'm not 19 years old anymore, I can only handle about three every two weeks, and even then, I have to lie down for a few minutes afterward.

There was a big buzz about Krispy Kreme doughnuts for a couple of years there, but they expanded too fast and now they're having all sorts of financial trouble. That was kind of weird, wasn't it? Everybody knows it takes about four Krispy Kremes to cause a heart attack, even in Olympic athletes, but their sales actually boomed a few years ago. Awesome link: That minor-league ballpark that started serving the Krispy Kreme Burger. With bacon. Why the hell not?

I'm more of an old-school doughnut guy myself. I like joints that have unstylish, outdated colors in their stores. Places like Dunkin' Donuts and Winchell's. You know what kind of doughnut you're getting there -- the same doughnuts peoplewere eatingback in the 70s, with a cup of coffee and a couple of Marlboro Reds.

Unfortunately, Dunkin' Donuts doesn't have any stores in Denver, so we have to look elsewhere. There's a good Winchell's on Broadway and another on Colfax in Lakewood (and by "good," I mean "well, doughnut shop good, anyway; it's no five-star restaurant"), and of course, the legendary Lamar's (may he rest in peace) on Sixth Avenue, where you can get a long john the size of a cricket bat. Of course, ny favorite of all time was a small chain that may have existed only in Iowa, and is now, I think, long closed: Donutland.

But thanks to YouHub.com and a historian from Golden named Richard Gardner, I think I have a new haunt in the metro area: Spudnut, in Arvada. Read Richard's story, complete with the history of Spudnut, by clicking here. Richard, you are a good man.

At the Legend Trail clubhouse here in beautiful Snobbsdale on Wednesdays they lay out an array of Krispy Kremes for the residents to eat while they do a bit of socializing. I usually make the scene and choke down a couple of jelly filleds before heading to one of yours and my favorite places for lunch, the 5 and Diner in Paradise Valley for a patty melt and fries. It took me 35 years of marathons and carrots to open those veins to the width of interstates. Now I'm going to play a little!

I had spudnuts once, but the doctor gave me a topical cream and they went right away.
