Ask Dot: Is Roll-O-Rama Gone For Good?

Dear Dot,

My family has been enjoying roller skating at Roll-O-Rama Skate Center on Welby Road for many years.

All of a sudden it is closed without any notice. Is it gone for good? Can you help us find out?

Thanks,

Donna Long
Henderson

Well Donna, Dot hates being the bearer of bad news but unfortunately, Roll-O-Rama Skate Center has closed its doors for good.

We tracked down the owner, Jan Rood, of Arvada, who confirmed that she sold the building and closed the doors Dec. 30, 2005. It will eventually be converted into a warehouse and office space.

Rood's parents bought the skate center in 1981 from Rocco and Violet Satriano, who owned the popular hangout during its heyday in the '60s and '70s.

Rood was eventually left to run the business after her parents passed away but she said the roller skating industry simply wasn't for her.

"I'm just not a roller skating person," she said.

As for Roll-O-Rama, it leaves behind a rich history. The skating center used to be a popular hangout for teens and often featured dances, sock hops and local bands.

It's even rumored the Rolling Stones once performed at the center but Rood suspects the popular band never really appeared there.

Rood said she is now busy babysitting her grancdchildren and wants to one day return to school to study history.

As for fulfilling your penchant for roller skating, Dot recommends Wagon Wheel Skate Center located at 14501 Brighton Road in Brighton.

It's open Friday nights, Saturdays and Sunday afternoons.
