Kindergarten roundups and preschool screenings in
Contributed by: ACSD14 on 3/28/2008

(COMMERCE CITY, CO - March 28, 2008) - Beginning in April, Adams 14 parents will begin the process of enrolling their children in preschool and kindergarten for the 2008-2009 school year.

Children who will be five years old by September 15, 2008, are eligible for kindergarten classes. Screenings will be held on Saturday, April 12, and Saturday, April 26, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Adams 14 Child Care Center (3C's), located at 5650 Bowen Court in Commerce City. The screenings are scheduled by appointment only, so please call soon. All children in the district must be screened to enroll in kindergarten next year.

Children currently enrolled in an Adams 14 preschool will be screened for kindergarten enrollment during school hours, eliminating the need for parents to schedule an upcoming screening. Registration and placement information will be sent home to parents this summer.

To find out more about kindergarten programs in Adams 14, parents may attend a kindergarten roundup event at any elementary school. The schedule is as follows:
School Address Date Time
Alsup Elementary 7101 Birch Street Thursday, April 17 6:00 p.m.
Central Elementary 6450 Holly Street Thursday, April 17 6:00 p.m.
Dupont Elementary 7970 Kimberly Street Thursday, April 10 6:00 p.m.
Hanson PreK-8 7133 E. 73rd Avenue Friday, April 11 5:30 p.m.
Kemp Elementary 6775 Oneida Street Monday, April 14 5:30 p.m.
Monaco Elementary 7631 Monaco Street Thursday, April 17 6:00 p.m.
Rose Hill Elementary 6900 E. 58th Avenue Monday, April 14 5:30 p.m.

In the 2008-2009 school year, Adams 14 will offer full day kindergarten at schools renovated in phase one construction last summer. Students at Central, Kemp, Hanson, and Rose Hill will receive full day kindergarten instruction next year. "Adams 14 is excited to offer full day kindergarten," says Chief Academic Officer Sue Chandler, "because research shows students in full day kindergarten benefit from improved reading, writing, math, and social skills."

While full day kindergarten may be an adjustment for some students, Adams 14 teachers and paraprofessionals will work with all students to help smooth the transition. Phase two schools (Alsup, Dupont, and Monaco) will offer full day kindergarten in the 2009-2010 school year.

Child Find will also screen children ages three and four for preschool for the upcoming school year. Preschool screenings are free and are scheduled by appointment only. The dates for preschool screenings this year are May 12 through May 15. Bringing your child for a screening is the first step in qualifying for preschool, and enrollment is limited. Preschool screenings do not guarantee a spot in preschool.
