Adams County Head Start Hosts Spring Reading Carnival

Adams County Head Start will host their 2nd Annual Spring Reading Carnival on Thursday, May 10, 2007, 4 - 7 p.m., at the Adams County Fairgrounds - Exhibit Hall, 9755 Henderson Rd., Brighton, CO 80601.

The highlight of the event will be Adams County Sheriff Doug Darr reading his favorite story to the children at 4 p.m. "I was very honored and excited when we were asked to read to the children for the Spring Reading Carnival," Darr said. "I appreciate the opportunity that this presents in allowing members of the Adams County Sheriff's Office to interact with the youngest members of our community in a positive and productive manner. I look forward to the carnival and know it will be a great time for all of us."

The event is designed to actively engage Head Start parents and children in reading and writing activities that support school readiness. Families will be able to sign up for a library card and check out books from Rangeview Library District's Book Mobile. In addition, parents will have access to adult literacy resources through the Adams County Workforce and Business Center and other resources from Adams County Community Development, Children's Hospital and the Urban Farm.

"Reading to your child at least 15 minutes every day is the most important thing a parent can do to help prepare their child for school" said Elizabeth Groginsky, administrator for the Head Start program. "The focus of our Spring Reading Carnival is to get parents and children excited about reading and writing. Sheriff Darr sets an example that reading is fun and important."

Cat in the Hat, Mother Goose and Clifford the Big Red Dog will also be attending the event. Thanks to the generous support of our community partners, every Head Start child will receive a free book.

Adams County Head Start is a comprehensive, community-based, federally-funded program providing services to 470 children and their families in Brighton, Commerce City, Federal Heights, Thornton, Westminster and unincorporated Adams County. The program is a part of the county's Community & Economic Opportunity Department, along with Community Development and the Workforce & Business Center.
