ACHS leaders fundraising for Final Challenge
Contributed by: John Albright on 4/13/2007

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (April 13, 2007) - Twelve Leaders Challenge student-mentors from Adams City High School will be paired with 24 potential leaders in the eighth grade as part of their "Final Challenge". The students will work together to raise about $600 to attend the Summer Academy at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park.

Leaders Challenge, a community-based organization that develops civic- and service-minded young leaders by engaging them in their community, provides high school juniors an opportunity to develop leadership skills and learn to give back to their communities. The program presents teams with monthly challenges, leading up to a Final Challenge, which is issued toward the end of each school year.

"The mission for this year's challenge is to develop the leadership potential of a group of Adams City Middle School students who will hopefully take an active role in leading their class while in high school," says Gary Hobbs, program coordinator at Adams City High School. "High school students will instill eighth graders with the positive leadership skills that they have obtained, including civic awareness and community service."

To raise funds to attend the Summer Academy in Estes Park, students are selling candy bars and contributing money of their own. In addition, the concession proceeds from the May 10 th three-on-three basketball contest, organized by Student Council, will go toward sending the students to the Summer Academy.

The Summer Academy provides students the opportunity to meet their peers from diverse regions of the Denver metro area and engage in a series of activities and discussions to build confidence and leadership qualities. As part of the academy, nationally known speakers present their perspectives on active citizenship and students participate in a day of service learning.

Founded in 2000 , Leaders Challengebegan with 60 participants from 10 partnering high schools in the Denver area. Today the program has more than 300 participants from 34 metro-Denver and Boulder schools.
