The Alzheimer's Association of Colorado presents its "Savvy Caregiver Program" workshop at a special midday time on Thursdays, Aug. 7, 14, 21, 28 and Sept. 4, 11 from 10:45 am - 1 pm at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 9371 Wigham St. in Thornton. Programs for persons with mild to moderate dementia will be held at the same time at the Thornton Senior Center, making it more convenient for caregivers to attend.
Caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease requires specific skills and an attitude that contributes to the well-being of both the caregiver and the person with the disease. The Savvy Caregiver Program enables caregivers to develop a sense of control and mastery within the caregiving role. Most people involved in care do it out of family love and obligation but have no training in how to effectively handle the challenges of this often overwhelming job. Attendees can expect to gain confidence in the role of caregiver during this six-session workshop. The Savvy Caregiver Program comes complete with caregiver manual and CD-ROM to help participants learn the critical tasks of caregiving. A donation of $25 per family is suggested.
Savvy Caregiver Program Objectives:
· Help caregivers appreciate the scope and impact of their work
· Reduce the potential adverse impacts of caregiving
· Increase caregivers' skills and knowledge for caregiving
· Help caregivers adopt a more strategic outlook on their work
· Improve caregivers' self-care skills
· Improve the quality of life for care recipients
· Increase involvement of families and other resources
