Sheriff's Office teams with Special Olympics
Contributed by: Adams County Sheriff's Office on 6/29/2007

Sheriff Doug Darr and the Adams County Sheriff's Office have been actively supporting Special Olympics Colorado and the associated athletes since 1989.

Over 8,500 athletes participate statewide in the Special Olympics activities and an estimated 70,000 people are yet un-served. It costs $470.00 annually for each athlete to participate year around. With over 600 athletes in Adams County, the cost is $282,000.00.

The Adams County Sheriff's Office has joined the Colorado Special Olympics in "The One Challenge", an effort to obtain at least one dollar from every Adams County citizen during the month of July. With a minimum one-dollar donation from each member of our community, the money needed for the local athletes would be raised and the remainder would be used to contribute to other Special Olympic athletes throughout Colorado.

Several organizations have volunteered to assist in making this fundraising endeavor a success and there is a wonderful opportunity for the community to assist in this effort. On July 11, 2007, at 6:30 p.m., a "Challenge Dinner" will be catered by Famous Dave's BBQ, who has generously donated the food. Members of the Colorado Rapids Soccer Club will be serving the undoubtedly delicious meal at the Adams County Fairgrounds dome, 9755 Henderson Road, Brighton, Colorado. The Adams County 4-H and Greater Brighton Fire Protection District have also volunteered to assist. There will be two Special Olympic athletes attending who will share their unique messages and the family members of a Special Olympic athlete will explain how much support the Special Olympic program means to the families and the athletes. A drawing will be held to determine the winners of prizes that have been donated. Everyone who attends will have the opportunity to meet the athletes. Anyone who is interested in purchasing a table at for the dinner is asked to call (303)655-3210, or e-mail sheriffsonechallenge@co.adams.co.us for reservation information.

Sheriff Doug Darr expressed his support by saying, "I am extremely proud, honored and humbled when I am able to join the other members of the Adams County Sheriff's Office in supporting and encouraging the Special Olympic athletes and their families. I think a community is sometimes defined by the way it takes care of each other and this is a tremendous opportunity for the members of the community to offer their financial assistance to athletes who need and appreciate the programs offered through the Special Olympics Colorado organization."
