"My" local bank?
Contributed by: Ron Girard on 2/19/2008

Last week I received a few checks in the mail that I had to deposit into my checking account and thought that I would stop by my local Chase bank and make the deposit.

Last year I switched banks from Washington Mutual to Chase. The reason I changed was because every time I would go into one of Wash Mutual's branches I felt like I was an outsider instead of feeling like I was a customer. Let's face it, if the institution that takes care of your money doesn't treat you right, then it's time to leave that institution.

So, after work that night I drove through the traffic mess we call I-225 and went to my local Chase bank in Green Valley Ranch. I parked in the parking lot of the bank and turned off my car and began to endorse my checks. By the time I endorsed my checks, this truck had pulled up along side my car so close, that I could not open my door. I put my window down and asked the guy to move his car so that I could get out of my car, as it was quite evident that he parked way over that parking space line, and he said something to me in Spanish and just walked away. Needless to say, I was not happy to have to crawl over my stick shift to go out the passenger door.

I then went into the bank and waited in line like everyone else, while I was noticing that all the signage in the bank was in Spanish. I reached for a deposit slip and it was all in Spanish. I pulled deposit slips from 2 other bins and they were all in Spanish as well. By this time I was quite upset that NOTHING was in English. I finally got to the teller and asked what do these signs say, and she didn't even look up and pointed to one sign and said this one says "blah blah blah" and then pointed to another one and said "blah blah blah", then handed me a deposit slip that was in English and then took my checks and gave me a receipt.

I am now thinking of changing banks again. I cannot believe that in the United States, that an American bank that deals with the American banking system would have everything in Spanish. It would appear that they are completely catering to all the illegal people we have from south of our border, in our city. Why did they not have anything in English? Please correct me if I am wrong, the native language of the United States is still English?

Don't think that I am a bigot, but speaking English is an American thing which makes our country unique. If you live in our country please speak and read our American language. Please don't give me the political correctness speach of how we are a melting pot of immigrants, as I will tell you that my grandparents came from Europe, but they LEARNED how to speak and read English, and people didn't cater to them back then.

How would you feel, if you went into a bank to transact business and you couldn't understand any sign in the building as it was written in a foreign language?

Give me a break, I'm an American, and I feel like an outsider in my own country. Have we as Americans given up to much, that speaking and reading our native language is almost gone? What a shame.

We are getting way off the main topic, the banks have their literature in English as well as any other Language that is predominant in the community they serve. (i.e. if your live in Chinatown, your bank is going to have Literature in English and Chinese, if you live on Commerce City your bank is going to have their Literature in English and more than likely Spanish;End of discussion.

Scott I never made this a race issue. I responded to your post about legal issue, what I said was a person is not required to speak English to be legal in this country, that is per Immigration and Naturalization Services. now in order to receive public assistance you have to be legal in this country and of course have a social security number. About the economy drain my posts are based on the U.S. Census which are real facts. My dream is not to have more than 12 million illegal immigrants in my country. I'm just letting you know that what you are writing is not accuratte. Everything that you wrote is based on anger and not real facts.

I am at home, I was born in the United States. As for your response, that is only one way to be legal in this country. there are more ways to be legal in this country; green card (that you did mention), work visa, sutdent visa, political refugee visa, adoption visa, etc, all of this options mention above are not required to read, write, speak or understand English, nor 8. and 9. Scott, you only did part of the homework. As far as draining our economy, read my previous posts.

here are the rest and #7 is the one I referred to so educate yourself 7. Have the ability to read, write, speak, and understand simple words and phrases in English; 8. Have knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of U.S. history and government; 9. Are attached to, and can support, the principles of the U.S. Constitution and can swear allegiance to the United States.

Another ignorant that doesn't not know what he is talking about. Look Scott, educate yourself in this topic, go to the library read some books, as a matter of fact take Kristine with you, try to absorb some knowledge out of those books, then write a decent post that is worth replying back.

Yo entiendo espanol, pero, pienso que todo deben hablar Ingles. /I understand Spanish, but I think everyone ought to speak English. My reason is, who controls the language is in charge. Yes, that's fear-based thinking, but it's the way things go. I hope you can forgive the jerk at the bank and not add that inconsideration to what is possibly a long chain of them. That guy in the parking lot may have been 'robbing the dignity forward.'

OMAR AND MICHAEL AND ALL OF YOU WHO ARE TO SCARED OR STUPID TO SEE THE PROBLEM Just so you know immigrants are required to speak and read English to get there proper papers and be LEGAL. MY FATHER INLAW JAUN WAS BORN IN MEXICO HE CAME HERE AND WANTED TO BE A CITIZEN HE DID IT THE RIGHT WAY AND HE WORKED HARD LEARNED THE LANGUAGE AS REQUIRED AND IS LEGAL SINCE 1996. IN HIS HOME WHEN SPEAKING TO HIS FAMILY STILL IN MEXICO ON THE PHONE HE SPEAKS SPANISH. BUT WHEN HE GOES IN PUBLIC HE SPEAKS ENGLISH. HIS CHILDREN SPEAK ENGLISH AND BARELY ANY SPANISH WHEN YOU ASK HIM WHY HE SAYS HE'S AN AMERICAN NOW AND IT WOULD BE DISRESPECTFUL. HE HAS MY RESPECT HE IS A STRONG, COURAGOUS MAN NOT LIKE THE DISRESPECTFUL THUGS WHO REFUSE TO LEARN AND IF YOU WANT TO SUPPORT THEM THAT'S YOUR RIGHT I MYSELF AM TIRED OF IT He also doesn't fly the Mexican flag if everyone who came to the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA FOLLOWED THE LAWS OF THE COUNTRY THEY WANT SO DESPERATELY TO ENTER WE WOULD ALL BE BETTER OFF
