The Commerce City Police Department will host a public meeting to notify residents about a registered sex offender living in the city. This person is currently classified as a sexually violent predator.
The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 2008 in the City Council chambers at the Commerce City Civic Center, 7887 E. 60th Ave. The meeting will also educate the public to increase public safety and awareness. Due to the content of the information that will be presented children under the age of 15 will not be allowed to attend the meeting unless they are accompanied by an adult.
Also during the meeting a panel that will include members of the Commerce City Police Department, a probation officer, a sex offender treatment provider, and a member from the Colorado Department of Public Safety will discuss the following:
Purposes and intended benefits of community notification
Sex-offender legislative history
Overview of community notification
General educational information regarding sex offenders, victims and management
Community protection and safety issues
The name and current address of the sexually violent predator will not be released until the meeting. The area of the community that could have the greatest interest in this matter is the area surrounding the 7500 block of Colorado Highway 2 to Quebec Street; however, the entire community of Commerce City is invited to attend.
The Commerce City Police Department's goal is to make sure the public is well informed and release information in the appropriate setting where questions about this issue can be answered.
Those unable to attend the meeting can obtain information about the subject of this notification on or after Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at the Commerce City Police Department, 7887 East 60th Avenue.
Vigilantism, or the use of this information to harass, threaten, or intimidate the subject of this notification is criminal behavior and will not be tolerated.
This offender is being monitored before the meeting.
