The Office of Emergency Management will begin regular monthly tests of the city's 17 emergency warning towers beginning July 5 at 2 p.m. Ongoing tests of the towers will be performed the first Saturday of each month at 2 p.m.
During the tests, a siren will sound from the warning towers followed by test announcements in English and Spanish. The tests will last about 90 seconds each.
Commerce City has developed a public warning system that includes the placement of 17 outdoor warning towers in strategic locations throughout the community. Citizens who are indoors have access to other portions of the warning system, including TV, radio and the telephone for reverse 911 announcements.
Each warning tower is equipped with a radio receiver and controls and solar-powered batteries. In an emergency, residents who are out-of-doors will hear a siren followed by voice recordings specific to the situation, as well as safety instructions.
The towers are controlled from the Police Department at the Civic Center. Warnings can be broadcast to alert the entire city, or to certain towers only for area-specific events.
For additional information, please contact Commerce City Emergency Manager Alan Colon at (303) 289-3630.
