Commerce City receives Healthiest Community Award
COMMERCE CITY - Commerce City has been honored with the Healthiest Community Award from the Metro Denver Health and Wellness Corporation (MDHWC). Mayor
Paul Natale
accepted the award during a special ceremony Oct. 27 at the Colorado Culture of Health Conference.
"This award is a tribute to Commerce City residents, and those who work on their behalf, who are engaging in a more active lifestyle," Mayor Natale said. "It recognizes the efforts of city staff and officials, business leaders and community organizations who have worked to provide opportunities for everyone to participate in healthy activities."
The MDHWC is comprised of city leaders from throughout the metro Denver area, health care providers and representatives from the academic and business communities. The commission represents 37 cities and towns in the metro area and is charged with drafting a strategic plan to ensure that the metro area is and remains "America's healthiest community."
The MDHWC presented the award to Commerce City based on the numerous health and fitness programs it offers to residents and employees and also for the many community initiatives it supports.
"Commerce City leaders have made community health a priority," Mayor Natale said, "and we will continue to promote healthy lifestyles through community programs, services and opportunities."
Mayor Natale said city partnerships with various organizations have helped to build and expand the trail system and bring healthy food and services to families in need. Through participation in programs like Live Well Commerce City and the Healthy Schools Partnership, the city helps provide needed nutrition to those who cannot afford it.
He also cited projects like the 9Health Fair, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Perimeter Trail, Buffalo Run Golf Course, Pioneer Park and fitness and health-related classes at the Recreation Center and other community centers. These projects are all part of Commerce City's expanding health opportunities, he said.
Residents are taking full advantage of the expanded offerings. City staff members have noted an increase in the number of people using hiking/biking trails, as well as the expanded park amenities, and the city is also seeing an increase in fitness and health class registrations.
Commerce City also offers employee wellness and fitness programming, with strong participation from staff members, and an on-site workout room at the Civic Center.
These city and employee programs are part of a larger picture, which includes planning for the near future and future generations. Commerce City will continue to increase program offerings, facilities and services, including partnering with local businesses like UPS and Suncor Energy to implement worksite wellness programs such as nutrition seminars, lunch-and-learns, and more.
City leaders are also looking at transit-oriented development as a means of promoting health and fitness and increasing opportunities for citizens to become active. Commerce City is updating its comprehensive and transportation plans, which will take concepts such as this into account.
The Healthiest Community Award recognizes Commerce City's efforts to build a framework for fitness by promoting and participating in a healthier, more active lifestyle.
The MDHWC was created by the Metro Mayors Caucus as a means of promoting health and fitness in the metro Denver area. The caucus represents 37 cities and towns in the metro Denver area, each of them candidates for the Healthiest Community Award.
