In recognition of National School Lunch Week*, Adams 14 Superintendent Susan Chandler and other executives helped serve lunch to some of the more than 7,000 students throughout District schools.
Donning the same brown aprons and caps that food service staff wears every day, they stepped in enthusiastically to serve full lunches of spaghetti and meatballs, salad and rolls. Superintendent Chandler commented while ladling spaghetti onto the trays of hungry, growing Rose Hill Elementary School students, "It's great to see kids enjoying good meals."
At Alsup Elementary School, Adams 14 Chief Academic Officer Lynn Heintzman, similarly clad in brown, paused from her round of service and said thoughtfully, "Serving spaghetti is a challenge." And then, as another line of young students came down the hall in her direction, she picked up a serving spoon and glanced at the food service professionals who do this every day. "This is a great group of people to work with."
Several schools throughout Adams 14 ended up with someone new working in the lunchroom that day and the Nutrition Services staff at Kearney Middle School said they appreciated the acknowledgment.
Every October, Adams 14 celebrates its classified employees for their commitment to students. Cleaning and maintenance staff, food service employees and bus drivers responsible for getting students safely to and from school all play vital roles in helping the District fulfill its mission to inspire, educate and empower every student to succeed in the 21 st century. Adams 14 is proud of their service, which makes a valuable difference in the lives of many.
*Signed into law by Harry Truman in 1946, the National School Lunch Program provides nutritionally balanced low-cost and free meals to students. According to the "State of School Nutrition 2007" report, school nutrition programs have introduced students to more fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, whole grains and low-fat and reduced sugar food varieties.
