The Denver Highlanders Rugby Football Club handily defeated the Woodlands RFC on Saturday at the USA Western Division 1 Regional Playoffs in Fort Worth, Texas by a 37-12 score to advance to Sunday's championship showdown against the Austin Blacks RFC. Austin earned their way into the title match by blanking the Gentlemen of Aspen 33-0 in their semi-final round.
The Highlanders lost a hotly contested match to the Blacks by a 14-7 margin in the finals. Highlanders head coach Steve Lewis had this to say, "It was a big step up for us as they (Austin) beat us by 40 points or so in last year's final, so we're making progress." The victory earned Austin the #9 seed at the May 12 & 13, 2007 National D-I Playoff Championships in Columbia, SC. The defeat was not an utter disaster for the Highlander's championship hopes however, and the boys will still be making the field of 16 as the #10 seed.
The Gentlemen of Aspen were the 44-28 victors over the Woodlands in Sunday's consolation match, and will be joining the Highlanders and Austin in South Carolina as the #12 seed.

An Denver schoolteacher explains to her class that she is a Barbarian fan. She asks her students to raise their hands if they, too, are Barbarian fans. Everyone in the class raises their hand expect one little girl. The teacher looks at the girl with surprise and says, "Janie, why didn't you raise your hand?" "Because I'm not a Barbarian fan," she replied. The teacher, still shocked, asked, "Well, if you are not a Barbarian fan, then who are you a fan of?" "I am an Highlander fan, and proud of it," Janie replied. The teacher could not believe her ears. "Janie, why are you an Highlander fan?" "Because my mum is a Highlander fan, and my dad is a Highlander fan, so I'm a Highlander fan too!" "Well," said the teacher in an obviously annoyed tone, "That is no reason for you to be a Highlander fan. You don't have to be just like your parents all of the time. What if your mum were a moron and your dad were a moron, what would you be then?" "Then," Janie smiled, "I'd be a Barbarian fan."

"Nobody in Rugby should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.. On Night Rugby vs Day Games "It's basically the same, just darker. I told him, 'Son, what is it with you. Is it ignorance or apathy?' He said, I don't know and I don't care.' We actually got the winning try three minutes from the end, but then they scored. That kick was absolutely unique, except for the one before it which was identical. Sure there have been injuries and deaths in rugby - but none of them serious. If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again. Strangely, in slow motion replay, the ball seemed to hang in the air for even longer.”
