COMMERCE CITY - City Council has agreed to continue discussions of building a baseball stadium in the city.
The city has been studying the proposal since last October when National Sports Services LLC, Front Range Sports LLC, and Commerce City began negotiating a Development Agreement that would outline the details of a proposed public-private partnership.
According to Roger Tinklenberg, director of finance for the city, the parties involved continue to work out the details of the proposed stadium, street improvements and final costs.
"We have the basic concepts identified such as the site and the size of the stadium, and the way to pay for the infrastructure," Tinklenberg said. "But we need to get better cost estimates."
The city is considering a site at 112th and Highway 2 near I-76. According to Tinklenberg, the stadium will cost between $7 million and $10 million depending on the stadium design and size. It would seat about 3,500 and have parking for about 1,200 vehicles. He said improvements to 112th Avenue are in the plans regardless if the stadium is built. If the stadium is built, Tinklenberg said improvements to 112th would be made at that time. Without the stadium, improvements to 112th will come at a later date.
National Sports Services LLC, led by Alan Fears, is also working with officials in northern Colorado Fort Collins on a similar project. If the projects pan out, both Commerce City and the Fort Collins area would be home to an American Association minor league baseball team.
