Baird honored for turf at soccer stadium

COMMERCE CITY, CO. (Monday, December 10, 2007) - At the 54th Annual Rocky Mountain Regional Turfgrass Association Conference and Trade Show, the RMRTA presented their 2007 Turf Professional of the Year Award to Bret Baird, turf manager at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

The award was presented at the conference opening session Wednesday, December 5, and is given to the individual each year who has made the most outstanding contribution to the turfgrass industry and who has stood out as the top amongst his or her peers in the areas of sports stadiums, golf courses, and other public venues.

Bret was nominated for his work and dedication to perfection in maintaining the top quality of the grass fields at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, which shone on an international scale this year through events such as Colorado Rapids home games, the 2007 Major League Soccer All-Star Game, and various international matches throughout the complex's inaugural season.

Bret was responsible for the construction, start-up, and continued maintenance of Dick's Sporting Goods Park's 25-field sports complex, which is home to the Rapids and host to dozens of youth leagues, national and international tournaments, and a variety of other play across multiple sports.

Visitors from all over the world and from all kinds of backgrounds have been overwhelmingly impressed with the facilities at Dick's Sporting Goods Park:

"The facilities at Dick's Sporting Goods Park are fantastic," said Gordon Strachan, Glasgow Celtic FC Head Coach when his club was here for the All-Star Game. "The field itself is excellent, it's perfect for soccer. Absolutely perfect. Some of the places we played last year were not conducive to good soccer matches, where the surface was poor, but this is perfect."

Jesús Martínez, President of the 2007 champions of Mexico, Pachuca Club de Futbol, had similar glowing remarks about the turf at Dick's Sporting Goods Park when his club participated in a SuperLiga match at the stadium this year: "I wanted to take some grass from the field. It is the best I have ever seen in the world."

The Rocky Mountain Regional Turfgrass Association hosts an annual conference and trade show organized by the Colorado Association of Lawn Care Professionals, the Colorado Sports Turf Managers Association, the Rocky Mountain Sod Growers Association and the turf management staff at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

Let's hope they deem the roots of that turf to be strong enough to handle the intensity of rugby football. Our team played 4 games on the all-season astroturf and received 3 non-contact injuries to 1 ankle and 2 knees resulting in surgery because the unforgiving nature of artificial surface. Have you ever heard the sound of a distal fibula snapping? Let's get the players on that wonderful turf in 2008.
