Blog Entry 8 of 54 Confessions of a Campaign Manager
My name is Christopher Moyer, and I am the campaign manager for Andrew Scripter, who is running for the State House in Jefferson County. In this blog I will show what life is really like on the campaign trail. In addition my true motivation for writing this blog will be to uplift the tenor and tone of campaigning and move beyond partisanship. I call this "Transcending and Transforming politics." We must always remember that above all we are not Democrats or Republicans, but Coloradoans and Americans.

Unconventional Jobs

5:45 am-

Somehow hitting snooze for the third time just seems like a bad idea. Dragging myself out of bed and into the shower I am starting to regret my decision to stay up half the night writing my blog about life on the campaign trail. I am meeting Andrew Scripter (candidate for State House) in 1 hour at a Conifer Park & Ride to meet voters.

6:50

I am five minutes late, but Andy got a good night sleep and is still in good spirits about his voter outreach efforts in Golden last night when he walked door to door.

We have been waking up early to get to bus stops twice a week since August. It might not seem like the most clear cut campaign strategy, but Andrew is really committed to meeting voters, and the rule of thumb is go where the voter is.

The plan is relatively straight forward I bring a large container of coffee and cups with Andrew's business card tapped to the side. I hand people the coffee, and Andrew shakes there hand. God bless America.

8:00

We have met around seventy people this morning. Most of them are half asleep and don't feel like talking to us. I can't say that I blame them, but at least we are giving them a cup of coffee and something to read on the bus as they head to work in Denver

After meeting voters for an hour Andrew has to get to his "real" job at the bank, and I have to go represent him at the Jefferson County Public Schools Legislative forum.

10:30

Sitting in the Patterson Elementary Library listening to a presentation on JeffersonCounty schools I have managed to miss ten calls in just 1 hour.

- One is a reminder that we have to pay our next round of postage on our mail pieces.

- One is a reminder that we have to pay for our next round of yard signs.

- One is my Dad reminding me that I had not actually talked with him in weeks.

- Seven of them are from Andy.

After seven missed calls I figured something must be wrong, and since I am suppose to be meeting back up with him I figure that I should make my excuses and exit as gracefully as possible. It is at times like this I wish I was a little more graceful

10:45

It turns out that Andy was ringing my phone of the hook because his wife, Holly's car will not start and so he had to leave his office and give her his car. Unfortunately Andy's jumper cables were not up for the job of starting the car. Therefore, it was time to give the campaign manager a call.

Driving 30 minutes from Lakewood to West Arvada I start to wonder if Barack Obama or John McCain's campaign managers ever have to jump start Michelle or Cindy's car.

----

Now I am not trying to turn this blog into purely a journal entry. That would be incredibly boring for anyone kind enough to read. It would even be too boring for someone trying desperately to fall asleep at night. However, I will occasionally use this forum to delve into the unpredictability that any given day will deliver.

Only on the campaign trail could you start the morning as a barista at a bus stop and end it as a bad car mechanic. Just in case anyone is wondering we got the car started, and made it Evergreen in perfect time for Andy to meet voters and give an interview with the "Canyon Courier".

2:00 pm

By mid-afternoon I had returned back to the realm of press sectary and political strategist. Since everything was back on plan and I have already made this blog entry the size of short novel by Tolstoy I figure that is as good a place to stop as any.

All the best.
