There are some phone calls you never expect to get even when you are on the campaign trail. Tonight I received one of those calls. The last twenty-four hours hand been standard and I felt that it was safe to go out and see a movie with a friend. It has been a long time since I have been to the theater, and an even longer time since I have been on a "date" (I hope that I can call it that) so I was feeling very happy when I finished a 15-hour day at 9:45 p.m. My "date" came by my apartment, and walked up to the movie theater to see "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People". I thought the movie was going to be about working in politics.
A little popcorn... a little butter... a little salt... and then we settled down in our seats to watch the previews.
Just seconds after the preview started my phone begins to ring. It was Andy. Now I had not talked with Andy since earlier this morning when we had been campaign at the bus stop at 6:45 a.m. Right after that Andrew had to go to Colorado Springs for a business conference that was going to keep him over night. Therefore, it was a bit surprising to see Andy's name come up on my caller ID, because he was out of town and working on his "real job".
I didn't answer of course, but he kept calling. Excusing myself from my rather perturbed date I went out into the hallway to call him back. Andrew answered calmly and rationally, but could tell immediately that something was wrong. Andrew explained to me that he had just talked to his wife Holly, who had said that someone had tried to break into their home. "Holly, told me that she heard something at the back door at around 9:45, but didn't think anything of it. A few minutes latter she was walking upstairs when she heard rattling at the front door. She turned on the porch light and saw a man in a trench coat, that quickly turned and walked away," Andy described to me.
At first Andy told me that he wanted to drive back right then, but Holly insisted that everything was all right and that she had called the police who were on their way. Then he wanted me to go over to their house, and spend the night to make sure that Holly and the girls were okay.
We got off the phone, and I called Holly up to see if she wanted me to come over. Holly, was calm and said that I shouldn't worry to much about it. I called Andy back and we chatted a bit more. One of his biggest concerns was that perhaps the whole event had been politically motivated.
Andy, pointed out that this sort of thing had never happened in his neighborhood before. Furthermore, he was concerned that someone might be trying to scare him and his family about the election. Of course, he quickly dismissed both of these speculations and immediately kept the right thought about the whole situation. He thanked me for talking with him and Holly, and said I should get back to my movie.
So I missed a half hour of the movie, and probably ensured that I won't get another date. Just another typical day on the campaign trail.
