Blog Entry 144 of 197 From the mountains to 6th Avenue
Many Evergreeners commute. It's been described as a commuter community. Accurate. So there is an etiquette to commuting. The first rule: Leave early. Even if you depart for a 9 to five job at 6:30 a.m., you will not be alone. If you like being alone on the highway, go to Montana. The second rule: Leave early If you don't get off til 5 p.m., take a book on tape, because you will be sitting in traffic near Federal and 6th, and entertainment of any kind is helpful. There are polite drivers, like me, who let others sneak in, especially in merge lanes. I try. You probably do too. The one thing I have decided that will not happen to me is that I will not be mangled in a car wreck on 6th Avenue or I-70 in either direction. What do you do to keep this promise to yourself?

Eats happening at Aspen Specialty Foods

Need sandwiches for 100?

A mini-farmer's market sprouted up outside Aspen Specialty Foods and Catering next to the Yellow barn at 27051 Barkley Road in Conifer. I stopped there and got some tomatoes from Nina Sampsel, who was just about to set up her art stand next to the produce. Although the tomatoes came from Washington state, Sampsel said, "The cantaloupes and everything else if Colorado grown.

Inside Conifer High School student Kelly Bleck and owner Mary Hellman-Wert were involved, very involved, in placing toothpicks in some good-looking sandwiches that were as big as a George Forman grill and thick as a brick.

"We're catering a lunch for 100," said Hellman-Wert, who runs the place with her husband Craig. They live nearby in Conifer. Bleck works there during the summer. Later in the morning when the brunch hour kicked in, the place was hopping inside and out. One man pointed to his plate beaming and said "It's terrific!"

Hellman-Wert said they do a brisk business on Saturday mornings, which was evident by the number of people enjoying all that food. Their Web site is www.aspenspecialtyfoods.com.
