Conifer music boosters drum up a crowd
Contributed by: Karen Groves/YourHub.com on 10/8/2008

The Conifer High School Instrumental Music Booster Club drew a crowd of close to 100 people Oct. 7 for one of their monthly dining fundraisers. This one was held at Chili's Restaurant in Conifer.

Donna Lucio, who is in charge of fundraising, said Chili's donated 10 percent of the receipt proceeds to CHSIMB.

Lucio's daughter plays the clarinet in the marching band, which has 150 kids participating. Conifer competes in 3A.

Lucio, who lives in Morrison, explained the booster club helps support the program not only through fundraisers, but by time and effort spent to transport kids and instruments to camps and competitions.

"The fee for a student to participate in marching band is $200. The booster club asks parents and students to raise an additional $100 per student." Lucio estimated it could cost a family $500 a year.

"We spend a lot of time transporting the kids on Saturdays. On Oct. 23 and 24 school is out and the kids have band camp. No buses run that day so parents have to make sure the students have rides. We rotate the responsibility," she said.

Lucio said the booster club's primary goal is to support the music director, Aimee Booth, who presents the boosters with a budget at the beginning of the year. This year it was $37,500.

"That's what we have to subsidize. That includes the fees collected. We may be at 65 percent of our goal this year," said Lucio

Booster club treasurer Kristin West said funds are spent for additional staff such as marching band coaches for color guard, drumline and pit, plus clinicians to come instruct the concert band, orchestra and jazz band in preparation for concerts and competitions.

"We also purchase the color guard uniforms and flags, and we send out a monthly newsletter to parents of students in the instrumental music program so they can stay abreast of upcoming events and see what the ensembles have been accomplishing," West said.

The booster club offers students and parents different ways to contribute their share of their fee or raise funds., which include buying grocery gift cards that net a 5 percent donation, working in the school store or selling refreshments at Bronco or Rockies games.

Mary Hastings, who is a vice president on the Conifer Lobo Unified Boosters, said,
"As parents we pay $125 for participation in the first sport and $110 for participation in a second. The school gets none of it. It all goes to the district as do any concessions sold at games at district venues, such as Trailblazer Stadium. This year team members have been asked to pay an additional $30 a player to help defray the cost of school buses. We are charged between $200 and $400 for each round trip (to and from each match or game), so a lot of teams carpool down the mountain."
