Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among females in the United States with over 178,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in 2007. Mammography (an x-ray picture of the breast) is the best screening tool available today. Changes in the breast that may be cancer can be detected by mammography before physical symptoms can be seen or felt. Early detection of breast cancer allows for early treatment options and increases survival rates.

JCDHE offers cancer screening for women 40 years and older. The services provided include a breast exam, pap smear, and a voucher for a free mammogram. Women who have a personal or family history of breast cancer or who have symptoms of breast cancer, (lump in breast; a rash or discharge from breast) also may be eligible for the free breast examinations. Anyone experiencing symptoms should contact their health care provider.
