Student artists to be honored at show

Area high schools will host an art show at the Center for the Arts Evergreen from Jan. 30 to Feb. 6.

According to coordinator Torrey Carlton, who teaches art at Conifer High School, art teachers at mountain-area schools are submitting pieces by students. Teachers will enter their work as well.

The show is not as long as it was last year. Carlton said he thought the gallery had a tight schedule that resulted in a one-week run instead of last year's three weeks.

Carlton was excited about the talent pool in the mountain area. After teaching at Bear Creek High School, he said he didn't know why, but the area from Platte Canyon to Conifer and Evergreen to Clear Creek was ripe with talent.

He said the show encompassed everything from drawing and painting to pottery and smaller sculptures.

He didn't know how many entries there would be, but had asked each school to submit at least 10 pieces.

"There are some talented kids up in the mountains. I think there are more artists per capita here than there were down in the city. I don't know why that is," said Carlton.

He said student Kristian Arnold would enter a colorful piece of pottery and praised his talent.

Arnold won a first place award in ceramics at the Arvada Center for the Arts last year according to Carlton.

Arnold said he sold a pitcher at last year's Evergreen show and looked forward to the show this year. He said he got his start in pottery after a freshman class with artist Andy Baird, who taught at Conifer.

Arnold takes AP history, literature and 3-D art and has applied to CU Boulder.

He said the importance of the show was having another credential in his portfolio.

"I'd like to start an art galley or art school eventually. The world would be a dim place without art," he said.

Cash prizes will be awarded to best of show, first-, second- and third-place winners on Jan. 30 at the opening reception. The judge is Evergreen artist Meryl Sabeff. Honorable mentions will receive gifts.
