New recycling center in Conifer

Residents in the U.S. 285 Corridor have a new place to dispose of their household recyclables at the Conifer Town Center on Main Street.

EDS Waste Solutions has set up two containers, one cardboard and one for co-mingled items behind the Safeway.

EDS Director of Sales and Marketing Dianne Bennett said the first container was set up Jan. 16 and the cardboard container was placed Feb. 6.

Bennett said in addition to Conifer Area Council, there were several groups who assisted from individual volunteers and Pine Cam as well as the business owners, who were a driving force. The project is a combined effort between the business owners at the center, Sunset Management and EDS.

"The community is ecstatic about this much needed, long-awaited service. Conifer Area Council heard requests from the community for local recycling through its various surveys and meetings. CAC assisted EDS through several public service e-mail announcements to advise the community about the new recycling center after it was in place," said Conifer Area Council member Susan Imming.

EDS was originally approached by Splish Salon, an eco-friendly hair salon at the center that promotes an environmentally responsible environment.

According to Bennett this is the first center of this type for EDS, which has its corporate office in Golden. Bennett said another recycling center is in the planning stages for Idaho Springs.

Originally EDS was hauling the container daily, but after the volume of cardboard and co-mingled products exceeded the container's capacity, EDS added a larger bin.

Sunset Management offered the space in back of Safeway for the containers.

Residents have been using the site at a regular pace.

Bennett said, "EDS has been in the Evergreen-Conifer corridor for more than 35 years and has strived to participate in the well being of the communities we serve. We believe that the support our customers give us should be repaid in the services they desire and deserve."

There is no charge to deposit recyclables, but Bennett stressed the importance of keeping the area tidy. She thanked volunteers and community members who cleaned up the area.

"We appreciate them for their efforts" she said.

She said patrons should be cognizant of the fact that the space is provided to EDS and the community at no cost and that it is vital to work together to keep it clean.

Bennett said EDS would do their best to keep the containers emptied, but on occasion people may need to take material back home until the next day.

EDS is assuming the cost of operating the trucks.

"At some point we hope to be able to recoup the cost of operating the equipment, but for now, we are happy to provide the service to the community," Bennett said.
