Get ready for the return of the Fall Whale of a Used Book Sale!

This autumn, Friends of the Jefferson County Public Library reveals an ocean of deals with the Fall Whale of a Used Book Sale! Held in the massive exhibit hall of the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, the sale features more than 95,000 books, CDs, DVDs, records, videotapes and all manner of audio books. Admission to the sale is free.
The Fall Whale of a Used Book Sale will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23 and 24, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25. The Friends of the Library Preview Sale takes place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 and is open to Friends members only. Go to www.friendsofjcpl.org or join that night. Registration opens at 5 p.m. Book "scanners" and other book scouting devices will be prohibited during the Preview Sale only.
As ever, the sale's prices and selection can't be beat. We have thousands of items to choose from, ranging from contemporary bestsellers to beloved classics. Hardbound books are $2.25; paperbacks are $1-$2; DVDs are $2.50; books on tape are $2; and videos are $1. You can find children's and teen books on the lower level from just 50 cents to a dollar apiece. Parents with strollers and those who want access to the children's area without stairs should go to the east side entrance of the exhibit hall.
Wander over to "Bert's Curiosity Corner" (named in memory of longtime Library Foundation volunteer and book collector Bert Herrman) to discover rare, old, collectable, oversized and high quality bound books. These books are individually priced. On Sunday, books in the Corner will be at half the original price.
Anyone familiar with the sale will surely look forward to Sunday, Oct. 25, which is "Bag Day." For only $5, you can stuff as many items as will fit into a bag. Support our "Going Green" effort by bringing your own bags or buy one of our canvas "green bags" for $1.
Proceeds from the Fall Whale of a Used Book Sale help fund teen and children's literacy programs. Great programs like Knott's Kids, Summer Reading Club and the Traveling Children's Library are made possible by your support and patronage.
The Jefferson County Fairgrounds is located at 15200 W. 6th Ave. Exit 6th Avenue South at the Indiana Street exit, then turn west onto the 6th Ave. Frontage Road. Follow the signs to the exhibit hall parking lot. Friends of the Jefferson County Public Library is always looking for volunteers to help at our book sales. Four shifts are available.
