Help the Hounds (and the kitties too)!
Contributed by: Karin Petro on 3/16/2007

"Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love, faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made." Roger Caras

Unfortunately not everyone has that view point. In 2006 we adopted out over 230 homeless animals that were neglected, abandoned or for whatever reasons their family could no longer provide for them. We've had some pretty bad cases. In one sense it was a bad year, but then on the other hand it was a good one because with love, lots of hard work and determination we provided a safe haven for these animals and a start to a better life. All our animals face challenges living in the foothills but for animals who have been cast off, the dangers increase every day that they're able to survive on their own.

Many people ask how we do what we do. It's all about the animals and, the love we have for them. We do it because of the great organizations in our community like Park County Animal Control, Dingo's Den, Lone Rock Vets, and Planned Pethood to name a few who help us with the care and well being of our animals. We're motivated by people who support us through donations, sponsorships, memberships, and coming to our events. A special thanks goes to our Shelter Manager Sheri, Vet Services Manager Kristy, Kennel Care Technician Jennifer and all our volunteers who are awesome. Because of them we are striving and our animals are finding forever homes.

Yes it's heart wrenching, but when you see an animal and his/her new family have that instant connection, it's worth it. This month we found that perfect home for one of our "problem child" Mac. Lovable but stubborn and full of himself, he came so close many times to finding a home. Dingo's Den in Conifer offered to be his foster home and improve his manners. Then 9News invited us for one of their Saturday Petline spots. He was a well behaved gentleman with a face that lit up the camera. Within an hour of the broadcast we had over 30 calls and one family came directly to the shelter. They were a young family with 2 girls and a toddler who had been waiting soooo long for a dog and Mac was it. The immediate synergy between them was heartwarming to the point of all of us being teary eyed. He engulfed their love and it showed. He even sat on command for the girls several times to their utter delight. Priceless. That's why we do it.

We are currently working on a project to have feral cats spayed or neutered. To date we have spayed or neutered almost as many cats as we did during 2006. Please consider Intermountain Humane Society for this award.

Thank you,

Judith Hariton, President
