Grizzly soccer inks seven on National Signing Day

ALAMOSA, Colo.- Adams State College soccer coach Dale Roden announced that seven players from four different states have signed letters of intent to play for the Grizzlies and attend ASC beginning in the fall of 2006. He made the announcement Wednesday, the first day that high school players from around the nation could sign with the colleges of their choice.

"I believe that the quality of our committed recruits reflects the growth process of our program. The recruits that we welcome today reflect that evolution," Roden said.

"Each and every one of them are not only quality players, but quality people and student-athletes who have a history of excelling on and off the field," Roden continued while noting that four of the seven have high school GPAs of 3.8 or higher.

The signing day class is the largest that Roden has ever had, including the 2002 class that built ASC's inaugural team. Roden signed four players on national signing day in that year.

Now four years later, Roden graduated nine seniors from the 2005 squad and will have another seven on the 2006 roster, most of whom redshirted at some point in their career.

Today's class includes three players from Colorado's front range, two from Texas, one from Kansas and the first ever Grizzly soccer recruit from the state of Hawai'i in Kapolei High School goalkeeper Brooke Sorrell.

The recruiting class, which Roden pointed out is not 100 percent complete, also covers all positions on the field. Each will be the first Grizzly from their respective high schools.

A state Olympic development team selection in 2005, Sorrell transferred to Kapolei from Pearl City High School, where she led the team to a third place finish in the state in 2004. Sorrell also plays club soccer for the Leahi '89 Premier, which won state titles in 2004 and 2005. The first goalkeeper that Roden has signed since 2002, Sorrell will join three redshirt seniors on the 2006 roster. "We feel very fortunate to have Brooke join our program. She will fill an void in our future plans for the defensive third," Roden said.

"She is a young, technically sound, experienced goalkeeper. It is our intention to encourage Brooke to evolve into a leader. She is a very solid keeper and someone who we are anxious to work with throughout her college career," he continued.

The group of Colorado players includes Rocky Mountain High School midfielder Ashley Grover, Conifer High School outside midfielder/forward Mallorie Kenczewicz and Rampart High School forward/midfielder Holly Miskho. Center midfielder Stefani Nygren of Keller (Central HS) and sweeper/midfielder Kelly Sprole of Crowley are the two Texas recruits while defensive midfielder Theresa Zackary hails from Salina, Kan. (Salina South High School). She and the three Colorado players will play their senior high school seasons this spring while Sorrell, Nygren and Sprole are currently in the midst of their senior seasons.

Grover, who also plays club soccer for the Arsenal Gold in her hometown of Fort Collins, was an academic all-state selection in 2005 and helped lead Rocky Mountain to a 10-5-2 and 6-2 overall and Front Range Conference marks, respectively, last season.

"We will look to Ashley to be a major contributor as soon as this fall. Her work-ethic and technical ability will make her contender for a starting position in our midfield," Roden said. "She has the mental anticipation to provide much needed balance to our forward attack."

Kenczewicz was Conifer's leading scorer as a freshman and sophomore before tallying nine goals and six assists in an injury-shortened junior season. A first team all-conference selection in 2004 and an honorable mention pick in 2005, Kenczewicz, who resides in Evergreen, also plays for the Colorado Girls Soccer Academy and Colorado Edge club teams and averages a goal and an assist per game for each.

"Mallorie brings so much to our forward attack. We have been searching for ways to improve on our attack and Mallorie has the ability to strengthen the offensive threat as soon as this fall. We consider her physical speed to be an asset that opponents will be forced to respect," Roden said.

Mishko has recorded eight goals and 14 assists in her first three high school seasons for Rampart and was a first team academic all-state and 2004 Olympic development state team pool pick. She also plays for the Corinthians Gold United and helped the team to a 2001 U14 state championship.

"Holly has experience in the midfield as well as some time up front in the role of a forward. She has exhibited the ability to score along with the creativity to serve up a number of assists," Roden commented. "We look forward to considering Holly in a couple of different roles for this fall. A player with the diversified experience that she possesses is always a great addition to the melting pot of preseason," he continued.

Nygren was named as the MVP for District 7-4A for the Central High School Chargers and helped them to a bi-district championship. Named to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Super Team, Nygren also plays for the Andromeda club team.

"Stefanie is the total package," Roden said. "She brings all the tools to the table- physical speed, work ethic, experience as well as confidence. We are extremely excited to see the impact that she will have, not only on our program but the RMAC (Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) as a true freshman this fall. Again, we are very excited to have the opportunity to work with her throughout her college career. She is capable of great things."

Sprole set a Crowley High School freshman scoring record by scoring 23 goals from her forward position before being moved back to the defender position for each of the last two seasons. Named as the District 4-A and Star Telegram Regional Newcomer of the Year in 2003, Sprole was a first team defensive all-district and all-regional defense selection in 2005. She also plays club soccer for the Fort Worth United, the same team that current Grizzly freshman and North Crowley High School products Ashley Fowler did.

"Kelly is a truly solid player who has the potential to contribute in more than one position on the field. We are looking to Kelly to step into our program and make a huge impact this fall. She will be a positive influence to our program as a whole with the ability to produce solid results."

Zackary has been named as Salina South's Defensive Player of the Year twice and earned second team all-conference honors in 2005. She scored three goals and assisted on another in 2005 and also serves as the team captain for the Force and KFA club teams.

"Her strength and desire are tools which enable her to boost our defensive third. It is true that we are taking a big hit, as we lose this year's graduating class. However, a strong, driven defensive player like Theresa exhibits many of the qualities that we must possess to be a legitimate competitor in the RMAC this fall."

Roden is still anticipating one additional commitment for the 2006 season, which will begin in August.
