Blog Entry 41 of 97 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

Review on McDonald's coffee: Cheap yet drinkable
Contributed by: Charmaine Robledo/YourHub.com   on 2/9/2007

What: McDonald's Premium Roast Coffee
Cost: A small cup is $1.19
Purchased at: The McDonald's across the street from our office, Cleveland and 16th
Grade: B

Earlier this week, I read with great interest an article stating a recent taste test indicated people preferred McDonald's coffee over Starbucks and other competitors.

As a faithful Starbucks drinker, I was a bit skeptical at first. How could McDonald's coffee stand up to giant like Starbucks? But one of the factors that appealed to the public (and me) was the price comparison: A small cup of joe from McDonald's is$1.19, while a tall cup of Starbucks' house blend is about $1.57 plus tax.

I decided to give it a go and compare. (Disclaimer: I don't usually order just plain coffee --as Brendan has pointed out to me -- I like the foo-foo s**t, so this might be a bias review.) This morning I ordered my McDonald's breakfast (which they botched up) with a medium cup of coffee. I kept it black because I knew we had cream and sugar at the office.

To be honest, I like the taste. It was slightly sweet, which I prefer, and wasn't too "harsh" (or is it called "strong" in the coffee realm?) on the caffeine-o-meter. It was more warm than hot, however, which made me feel I wasn't provided a fresh cup. Halfway through drinking it, the McDonald's coffee started to taste watered down.

I then went downstairs to Starbucks and got a tall House Blend, which the barista told me was also mild. I left room for cream and suger (I used theirs), and came back upstairs to try it out. To me, the Starbucks coffee tasted burnt and not-so-sweet, which is a boo from me. But then again, I've been so used to having vanilla flavoring and whip cream on top of my coffee from them, so perhaps I was expecting too much out of the regular joe.

I think that's the thing that makes Starbucks supreme: The option of adding "foo-foo s**t" to your coffee to make it your own. I always order my vanilla latte with extra whip cream. Extra. McDonald's can't offer me that.

The result of my review? Get a cup of coffee from McDonald's if all you want is just a plain coffee for cheap. Get a cup of coffee from Starbucks if you want extras, such as making it nonfat or soy or with Madagascar cinnamon (they don't really have that, I was just saying).

I'm not a coffee drinker (it tastes like coffee), but I'm always happy to see that a frugal alternative can out-bean its more expensive and trendy counterpart! That alone is grounds for a major thumbs up (and a bad coffee pun).

Can someone give the Starbucks people a much-deserved punch below the belt for having the chutzpah to call their smallest size "tall?" Tall is not small! Tall is, in fact, an indication of size greater than the norm - that is, the exact friggin' opposite of small.
