Colfax and the Argonant [sic]

Maybe it's because I'm an editor or maybe it's because I drive/walk/ride past this sign on a near-daily basis, but I noticed something that just isn't right about the sign on the new bodega at Colfax Avenue and Grant Street.

As you can see at right (or by clicking here for a full-size photo) "Argon ant" is most definitely not "Argon aut", as the ancient brickwork just to the right of the sign indicates is the name of the building.

I have two theories:

1) Rather than risk a copyright fight with booze giants Argonaut Liquor just down the road, the owners decided that no one would notice/care if they were one letter off

2) The store is in fact names after some sort of wingless insect made entirely of a noble gas (argon + ant).

I guess only time (or a phone call) will tell.

Tell me your own theories in the comments section below.

I would speculate that the merchant don't know how to spell and that is the way he or she spells Argonaut.

Maybe they didn't want to pay for an ad in the yellow pages, so if their neighbor is Argonaut liquor, Argonant would be right there to catch the spillovers and dyslexics.

Maybe the sign person just didn't have a "u" that day, and figured no one would really notice ...
