The 'Rocky' and the future of YourHub.com

This has been quite a week, eh?

The first big snow of the year, followed by 60-plus degree weather, a Broncos win and, of course, more snow.
But last week came bearing much more unnerving news: The Rocky Mountain News is for sale.

Since a good portion of you reading this section found it bundled with your own copy of the Rocky, you may wonder how this development will affect YourHub.com.

YourHub.com is jointly funded by the owners of The Denver Post and the Rocky. We are produced by the Rocky and share a good part of our operations with them, but our business is not included in the potential sale. Long, complicated story short, our fate is not necessarily tied to the Rocky's.

The biggest advantage YourHub.com has in the current climate of doom and gloom looming over the newspaper industry is, in a word, you. We started more than three years ago as one of the first places in the country to explore what was then called "citizen journalism" on a large scale. We provide a Web site for communities to share their own news and events, paired with local print sections that feature the news that matters to you.

Our power comes from the fact that we exist democratically (insert overused "for the people, by the people" line here), and I still believe that to be the future of journalism.

The truth is, we don't know exactly what is going to happen to the Rocky or the exact extent to which that it will affect how we operate here at YourHub.com. But in the meantime, we will keep bringing you local news and the best content written by you and your neighbors.

Remember, the print edition is just the barest tip of the iceberg of content we've got to offer online, so go explore your neighborhood. I can guarantee you will end up reading a story you'd never see in either of the daily papers.

If you would like to comment on these recent events, leave me one below and talk back. Or, if you'd like to jump in and experience our community journalism party for yourself, head to your local hub by choosing it from the drop-down menu on the left and start posting. I'll see you online.

Thanks for letting us know the latest. As a publicist and a writer and editor, I am a great fan of Your Hub and other citizen journalism initiatives. It helps small business, non profit entities, service clubs and others to tell their stories. Thanks for the opportunity.

Eric, it take a professional to spin bad news into such a pitch for YourHub.com! But, it works. Thank you for the insight and the reassurance.

You have built a solid foundation. Developments beyond your control may require more innovation on your part. Best wishes, jack driscoll, MIT Media Lab (http://web.media.mit.edu/~driscoll)

Thanks.

The best is to wait and see what happens and not to speculate on the future.

Very well written Eric!!
