Q: We are having difficulty in setting and achieving goals and I am frustrated! Can you help me?
A: Goal setting is as important in our personal lives as it is in business. The common denominator in all the self-help books is the importance of goal setting. We're told to set long-term goals, short-term goals, lifetime goals and personal goals.
So, how do we set and achieve goals? Stephen R. Covey says in his book "7 Habits of Highly Effective People", "
Begin With The End In Mind". This means to start with a clear understanding of your destination. If you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there.
I believe that one's difficulty in setting goals is rooted in a perceived fear of failure. That is, the blow to our integrity when we don't reach our goals. When we make and keep commitments, such as setting and achieving goals, it reflects the amount of trust we have in ourselves.
Goal setting is about 'eating the elephant...one bite at a time', turning your vision into achievable, actionable steps. When setting goals, follow the
S.M.A.R.T principle (
Specific,
Measurable,
Achievable,
Results-orientated,
Time-framed). Focus on smaller, short-term goals and by achieving them, gain the confidence to set more challenging goals. Remember, setting goals using the
S.M.A.R.T. principle gives you the best chance of achieving them.
