Blog Entry 106 of 108 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

Those Bacon Brothers sure can sizzle

In late February, I got a call and an e-mail from John Lindsay, sales and marketing manager for the Hard Rock Cafe, about a March concert series they were participating in. He was particularly excited for the Bacon Brothers coming into town March 29 and that he could work me and a guest in for a VIP access to the show.

"Bacon Brothers?" I thought. "As in Kevin Bacon? Hot dog! I'm there."

I invited my friend Jennifer to go with me to the concert. At first, she didn't realize it was actually Kevin Bacon and his brother, Michael, playing. She thought it was a tribute band and that would be interesting to see. Then, later when she was telling friends about it did she realize we were seeing Mr. Footloose himself.

The Bacon Brothers were going to play pretty late that Sunday night, about 10 p.m. Jennifer and I met at Hard Rock downtown a little after 9. I was giddy with excitement. I admit; I was looking forward to seeing Kevin up close. As I said earlier, we were set up with VIP passes, which just gave us access to some appetizers roped off upstairs.

While we snacked, local musician Matt Morris opened the show and he played a decent acoustic set. I was curious as to where the brothers might be lurking around the cafe. If you're familiar with the restaurant at all, you know it's not that spacious.

The place was full when we arrived, but lo and behold! We ran into former YourHub.com editor Fairlight Baer-Gutierrez and her friend Kristy Bassuener. Kristy also got VIP passes to the show. The upstairs area was crowded, so we decided to brave the floor downstairs.

We actually got a good spot and view of the stage. We were still unsure where the band would come in from, but we didn't realize there was an elevator directly behind the maitre 'd stand.

Squeals and cheers rose as Kevin and crew made their way up the stage. They instantly went into a rousing number and Kevin, with tambourine in hand, danced across the floor. I yelled, "Cut it footloose, Kevin! Cut it footloose!"

The band played a long setlist -- close to 15 songs I have to say. They did rock, funk and a little bit of reggae. Both Bacon Brothers were excellent musicians, with Kevin switching from acoustic guitar to tambourine and singing.

The majority of the crowd was definitely in the older section, but it was a good mix of people. Shall I venture to state that Kevin's six degrees knows no age limits? A highlight of the evening was one woman who was getting a little rowdy near the stage being told to leave the floor. Apparently, she threw something at the band. I don't think it was anything personal.

The concert benefited Musicians On Call, which is an organization that aims to bring live and recorded music to the bedsides of patients in health care facilities to enhance the healing process. That sounds like so much fun.

That's awesome! Stir of Echoes FTW!

I'd have to say that my favorite kevin bacon movie of all time is A River Wild, even though he was total jerk who tried to kill a guy with glasses (you shouldn't even hit them, much less kill them) a small child and dog. did he give in to your footloose request?

Wow I did not know Kevin Bacon had a band! Sweet.

Sounds like he really brings home the bacon (in a musical way).
