Blog Entry 22 of 24 shades of gray.
Do you ever wonder… Why sheep don’t shrink when it rains? I honestly do. Here you’ll find no rhyme (unless I’m feeling poetic), reason (unless I have one) or consistency (unless I accidentally post the same thing twice) in my cyber contributions. I’ve long ago accepted defeat to my arch-nemesis Punctuality, so expecting postings on a structured basis is discouraged. I do, however, invite you to check in periodically as I write about things that pique my interest while prowling the city. As a photographer, I embrace that nothing is ever just black and white and this blog may also be frequently used as an outlet for pictorial expression. If you have a thought or two of your own bouncing around the old noggin, I recommend starting up your own blog and giving everyone the no-holds-barred account of life in your corner.

It's recreation, not the World Series

Every Tuesday, after two very hectic and busy days of deadline pressure, I like to unwind. For me, a great way to accomplish this feat is my Tuesday night recreation softball league.

Usually, I feel the tension melt away as I look forward to a bit of exercise and catching up with friends. I was therefore bummed to have this little haven ruined for me last week.

My team was stuck in a back-and-forth battle, which we ended up losing in the seventh inning. Of course, we would have liked "The W," but it was a well-played bout by both teams.

It was such a fun game that when the team playing after us was looking for an additional female player, I volunteered - with the disclaimer that I was no Dottie Hinson (any A League of Their Own fans out there?). What followed was a terrible display of sportsmanship by both teams. Yelling at the umpire, each other, their own teammates, throwing bats and sliding into players on purpose. They were so intense, it crossed my mind to make a run for it when I was on deck with one out, bases loaded, tie game in the bottom of the seventh. Luckily, the guy in front of me batted someone in and it was all over.

With nothing at stake except eventually a championship T-shirt - the kind you end up wearing just for lawn work and exercising anyway - why get so worked up? I'm not saying there's anything wrong with trying your best or wanting to win, but they don't call it a "recreation" league for nothing.

I know it's not just adult sports that are starting summer sessions, kids and students are in summer leagues and training camps, too. If you are someone you know had a great game, pulled off an upset, tried something new, helped out with the team or made up a new sport in the driveway, let YourHub.com readers know.

It's summer for gosh sakes, go play - and try to have fun while you're at it.
